What was the scariets moment of your life?

What was it? It can be either a near death experience or just a scary night...... anything.

My scariest moment wasn't actually a moment, it lasted about 3 to 5 minutes.
A few years back i was an F/O on a MD-11 operated by City Bird. We where on route from Brussels Intl. to Puerto Plata.
About half-way into the flight the captain just finished eating and i was just back from the toilet when all of a sudan the aircraft banked left and made a hard left turn. I strapped myself in and without saying a word i looked at the captain who asked me to disconnect the auto-pilot and take controls. I took controls and applied a counter move (hard right without aileron). It scared the hell out of me when i noticed the aircraft didn't level and just kept in left bank. I informed the captain who contacted control and asked them to keep our surrounding airspace clear because we had lost virtical control over the aircraft. I checked the altitude indicator and noticed we where not loosing alot of altitude so we had some time to do some toruble shooting. We where still at flight level 300 (30,000 feet). We where dropping about 300 to 400 feet per minute. The captain started to trouble shoot while i was still trying to get it to level off. He told me he wanted to apply a break-out (check if the controls itself aren't jammed). The controls itself where not jammed so he had to look further into the problem. He began to check all hydrolics and no hydrolic pumps and/or valves gave any errors. The captain said to me he was pretty sure that it was either a controls or hydrolic problem. He asked me if i did feel any feedback on the yoke when i turned it right. I didn't feel any feedback at all. At that point he narrowed it down to a hydrolic failure so he started to re-route all the hydrolic lines one by one. An MD-11 has got a shutter valve after and infront of every seperate hydrolic line wich is backed up by a second line. He was at his fourth line when the aircraft started to level off.
We later found out that the line infront of the stabelizer pumps had been replaced the day before this flight and it wasn't done properly so the line lost all presure wich resulted in the movement of the stabelizer (the stabelizer pumps didn't have any counter presure anymore so they all wen't to the "null" position).
We contacted control to advice them that we had control again and all operations where back to normal. We arrived at Puerto Plata without any injuries.
At the moment of the events itself i didn't really feal scared but about 10 to 15 mins after that i had to go to the toilet again

So what's your scariest moment?

Getting chased on my trail bike when I was 17 by a highway pursuit car. Nearly crashed a couple of times, and my heart was pounding.

I got away and in to my house, but apparently I nearly hit someone on the footpath as I went flying down my driveway. She told the police which house I went into, and they came to the front door.

My mum let them take the bike (even though I told her not to let them in), and although I convinced them it was not me riding, but rather a friend who dropped the bike in and took off over the back fence (I said this to avoid getting a fine) they took the bike and sold it.

They were chasing me because it was the bike was not registered for the road, was obviously uninsured and I was unlicensed. I was showing off to some mates when they spotted me.

I think I ran two red lights (I managed to look, but still dangerous) and must of broke over 100 road rules (including massive speeding). My mum was not impressed at all. I saved up for that bike for like 6 months, and it was a good one, but it not worth the potential trouble.

In hindsight, it was pretty fun.

uuummm a hard one,

I have to say my scariest and the worst for me was, racing in the Le Man 24 hour race in France a few years ago, I had to go off line through the Mulsanne kink to avoid a slower car, at that point I was travelling at 239 mph, I think it was then that the left rear tyre punctured and sent me out of control into the barriers. I hit the barriers 4 times, I got out and looked back at the Porsche 956 just then what was left of the car burst into flames.... I had actually gotten out without knowing I had several broken bones from the 40g + impact... I then collapsed... it was 3 days before I regained conciousness.

I survived to race another day, although everyone I knew thought I was "mad" which I am.

We were on the Autobahn in Germany and a car came the opposite way.

I swerved around the car and went on, my heart stood still. Later on that day we watched the news and they were showing the guy driving the opposite way on the Autobahn and that 50 car accicent he had. We past it.

That was almost 20 years ago and I still dream about it sometimes

Scary

i have a disorder. Every single moment of my life is frightening. In fact every moment is actually scarier then the next. So right this second is actually the exact scariest moment of my life.

Wait I am more scared now so this is it.

no this is it.

Yeah RedBumper, but then when you race cars at that speed you have to expect some shit, it can happen and it does, hitting solid barriers at 239 mph, I never got the chance to hit the brakes, not that that would of made much difference the air over the car was spolit so all the downforce went.....

But your story is way cool in terms of how you kept your head in the situation and went through everything to resolve the problem I admire you greatly for that..... makes you feel a little safer when your flying....

When I was 17 I was fooling around with trying to wiggle my pecs. Doing that caused my heart to stop. I was in front of the bathroom mirror and I could see my face going red, and felt like I was about to pass out, when it did a massive thump and started again.

Scared the fucking shit out of me, obviously I've never tried that again.

I was only F/O those days, i admire those captains. They all make you feel 100% sure that whatever situation you got your gonna make it safelly. I was just a young guy who finished flight school three years before this happened. I had alot of hours with this captain and he learned me alot about "human performance" and how you have to work your mind around some situations and stay focused on the main goal: keeping it up and stable.
Flight school learns you the basics and the theoretical aspects of flying a jet, the captain does the rest, and they all do a good job at it. Flying still is and will always be the safest way of travel, due to the aircraft designers, the techical departnement and last but surelly not least the captains and the rest of the crew.
I wouldn't wanna be in your shoes though hitting something at that speed and have my body going thruw a 40g+ impact.

Jenson Button at the Monaco Grand Prix crashed this year doing 170 mph they said he pulled 32 g.....

Ralph Firman at the Hungarian Grand Prix was doing 155 mph and hit the barriers he pulled 37 g.....

I was doing 239 mph...........

When I went into labor with my second child, my daughter. I went in, and startedhaving more pain between contractions than during.. The doctors and nurses all rushed in, and declared that I had to have a c-section immediately or the baby and I would die. My uterus was tearing... so they rushed me off, and there were like 6 people working on me as I drifted off to sleep. Well I woke up, I had a tube in my nose, and I couldn't stop shaking, because of the affects of the anesthetic. I couldn't control my limbs, and that freaked me out. I wasn't wtih it, and kept trying to take the thing out of my nose that was bothering me. I asked about the baby, they said it was a girl and she was fine. jact brought her in, said she was perfect, it was ok, etc, and I was a bit more relieved, but I felt horrible and still couldn't control the shaking.

Then I heard the nurses babbling about oxygen and bleeding and all I could think about was how it felt like I wasn't breathing enough, and I was dizzy and shaking violently. Then the nurses started raising alarms and paging doctors saying I was bleeding out and they must have cut an artery during surgery, and that I had to be rushed back to the OR, and me, still heavily sedated, didn't really get a grasp on anything. I just knew I had two babies now (my son who was 2ish at the time) and I couldn't die. If I closed my eyes I might not wake up and my babies wouldn't have a mommy. I was so terrified I fought the nurses off, wouldn't let them put me to sleep. All I can remember is saying over and over that I couldn't die because I had babies, and they shouldn't make me go to sleep.

I know I wasn't with it, but because I couldn't think logically and all I felt was emotions, the thought of not waking up for my babies was the scariest moment of my entire life. Everything ended up ok, and this incident was what made the doctors realize more than anything that I was a hemopheliac, but if I never have another moment like that again, it will be too soon.

my friend was driving in cincinnati and we noticed the neighborhood looked really shitty. we pull up to an intersection and see tons of people running away and look in the intersection and theres a guy shooting everywhere 15-20 ft from the car. i just ducked down on the floor of the car and we waited for him to take off and sped thru the light and took off.

WTF? How old are you now? You should have gotten much more then just 4 months, they should lock your ass away for a very long time.
If you ever look into the mirror, do you ever see that little light in the corner of your eyes?

You were a first officer on an MD-11 and now your posting on GFY?
Did you get fired?

happened to me last week.
parking my car.. and noticed smoke coming out. And I was like.. WTF?!?!?!?! So I get out and go check.. and hood wasn't that hot. Didn't feel abnormal. I open the hood and flames pop out.. I was lucky enuff to be a foot away. Some reason I stepped back when I opened it. I thought maybe radiateur busted and I didn't want to get alot of fluid on me or any at all.

So.. slammed the hood down and called the fireman on my cell

Took them 10mins to get there, fuckin idiots went down wrong street. Had to call 911 back and give them the cross streets again.

Anyhow.. that's my scariest soo far. But still young, maybe i'll get some more I can share with others.

I'm not English but people know what i mean, that's the most important thing. And yes, i went from a big bird to smaller jets...... it was either that or stay grounded these days.

Easily my scariest moment was when I was in the service.I worked in battalion operations for Pershing Missile(nukes)and we were live in southern germany when a *REAL* order came over the com system.

For about 2 minutes while the message was being authenticated,I was sure we were about to be ordered to launch a strike on Eastern Europe..

Mine was when I was with a friend and she was driving. A guy passed her and she decided to try and speed up so he couldn't get by her. This guy got HELLA pissed at her. He proceeded to run her off the oposite side of the road and bump her front end with his car. Then he sped up a bit and cranked his car sideways in the road so she absolutely couldn't get by him. He got out of his car, and she proceeded to do the saem. Before I knew it, the 2 of them where on the ground fighting. She finally got him in a choke hold and he started turning purple, he was begging her to let him go. I was standing there watching in disbeleif, that all this crazy shit was happeing. She lewt him go and they got up. I was looking down the street to see if any oncoming traffic was going to hit us....when all of a suuden this asshole blind sides me right in my temple. I wasn't even looking and had nothing to do with the whole thing. Needless to say, I was out cold before I hit the pavement. The whole side of my head was completely black as night from this dude. He was a 28 year old ass-hole and I was a 21 year old very tiny girl. I was completely blind in my right eye and partially deaf for about 2 weeks. Now I have a blind spot from the whole ordeal, and doctors are currently trying to figure if it was from the blow to my head
My friend got absolutely not one scratch from her fucking dumb ass games, I had to pay the price. What a joke

awww shorty

annnyway I have a couple scary moments

Me and my friend Josh were flying down a dirt road on my fourwheeler this month 2 years ago. The road turned into tar around a sharp corner and a bridge showed up out of nowhere. I tried to jump off and roll over the bridge but no luck me and my friend josh went flying over a 30 foot drop at 55 MPH into a very shallow river.. josh was face down with blood coming up from his face.. he had a broken nose, broken wrist & a large hole in his ear. My helmit fell off in mid air ( I think I remember it knicking off the bridge ) and I landed roughly on the rocks/water.. all I got was a minor concussion while josh had a major one and couldn't tell up from down.. needless to say I got a rediculous amount of Vicodin when I didn't need it

My second scariest moment happend about a month ago.. I went over to my friend Joe's house and he's like "I have a suprise for you".. he broke out some big fat lines of coke and some big fat lines of adderol (both make your heart beat and work as uppers)... I hadn't had anything to eat in a day and a half and the lines hit me like a ton of bricks.. we went to bring our friends girlfriend's to summer school (anything to help out our homies) & I felt my face and head start tingling over the numbness and before I knew it I couldn't speak or move my entire body.. My heart was beating faster than I imagined possible at least 5-10 beats a second. I knew I was dead, I was like yup.. finally OD'd you moron.. as I sat there and thought this is the day I die, my whole body vibrating and not functionable.. my friend joe is scared as shit... I actually felt myself slipping out of life and into death.. it's the scariest shit I've ever experienced.. I somehow made it inside his house and threw up, ate something, had another attack and slowly came back to normal.. This whole ordeal lasted about an hour. I never figured out if it was a Heart Attack, Stroke or a Seizure (everything but seizure is common in my family).. who knows.. theres a bunch of other times I should have died but didn't.. countless suicide attempts when I was young stupid and depressed.. I've come to the conclusion that I am immortal or lucky.. I sure as fuck should be dead by now

Damn Pad, you have had a stroke of luck with you haven't you. Must be a sign that you have something bigger here in life that needs to be accomplished before you go

I have had an experience similar to that when I was in high-school, back in '96. I was drinking for the first time ever and I drank like shit a jug of somehting I think was called Matador....spelling? Donno if that was really it but I was so fucked up that I passed out and was looking right down on myself laying there on the floor. That was scarey shit, let me tell you. Needless to say, I am not much of a drinker now.....lol. It only took me one try to figure out it wasn't for me
