Linux is for bitches

http://www.linuxisforbitches.com/

In the beginning, Linux was pretty cool. It was free (always a plus), had a rapid development cycle, a moderately knowledgeable user base, and a funny mascot.

Then the pinheads arrived.

I don't have an issue with Linux so much as the user base it attracts. More and more I'm reading about and experiencing what I like to refer to as the "dumbing down of Linux".

Now you may say, "Well this is to be expected... Hell, look at the Windows user base." Yes that's true, but the Windows user base doesn't claim to be "l337", a "hax0r", or anything of the sort. Linux users do and often.

I hope to use this site to poke fun at, possibly educate, and clean up the Linux user base.

I have these simple beliefs:

1) The root partition should be small... painfully so.

2) /var is not for web servers or their content.

3) The kernel has one job: to keeping the system up, running and stable, not to serve web content - I don't care if it's faster from the kernel.

4) Really understanding IP and the applications built upon it is a requirement before you are "1337"

5) I don't care how fast something is, if it comes at the cost of security or stability it's stupid.

6) *BSD is the way. (Free, Open, or Net - pick one)

Hahaha I'd like to see that

*edit*

also note: trading speed for stability and security is just dumb

everytime my friend and me go by the unix monthly magazine and it comes with the linux cd, the break it in half and throw it as far as we can down the street as we can.

personal thoughts. linux ok for desktop. but for servers bsd.

everything is based on bsd. system v was based on bsd. everything is generated from bsd.

most linux people that try to switch to bsd end up going back cause they dont have a clue.

And with full linux binary compatability in FBSD you have no excuse.

hellz yeah, why don't more people understand this?

i ran asshat 7 once. worst mistake ever. that thing is so ass-backwards i can't even figure it out.

but, on the bright side, i had a fully running X workstation in like 15 minutes. i think all i had to tell it was username, password, and network info.

lame

slack 4.0 was the last linux distro ive ever used. My first was debian 1.x.x... debians only gotten worse. Lost interest in slack.

-edit-

was it 3.0 or 4.0... i dont remember they had a whacked version jump to 7.0 in there somewhere to keep up with redhat's release numbers... blah whatever.

i read the explanation for that on the slack site.

basically, it was because users were feeling inferior and complaining that the ver numbers were so low, particularly in comparison to asshat.

so, they made a jump to make slack sound "current" with the rest of the commercialized linux world.

Stop using -foptimize-to-hell-and-beyond type flags then.

I like Gentoo, but first and formost, USE WHAT WORKS.

FreeBSD is proven solid on webservers, it's most people's choice.

Linux is proven to perform better on mailservers and database servers, generally.

They're both available, use the best tool for the job.

First off, I have 15 machines of different architectures and oses for a reason. I do security auditing, and penetration tests. I am also a sysadmin. I use what works, I also use what provides the highest quality of service and greatest reliability. Do you want to be hosted on an insecure machine that preforms faster under a high load and gets hacked, or do you want to be on a machine with less users, that preforms just as well as the linux machine under the same load without as many users that wont get hacked or segfault on you? Don't be cheap, go for the proper solution.

Sysland exploits perhaps? There's user seperation for a reason. Do you honestly beleive keeping up to date makes you secure?

i would love a flavor of nix on one of my spare laptops

but last time i tried installing linux (maybe 2yrs ago) i fucked it all up, then didnt know how to delete the partition, so i tossed the entire pc

then one time i got it installed, and couldnt configure internet.

i wish i had local friends to help with this shit, but everyone in my area is a wiger and thinks AOL is all the internet is about

Nah,

The pinheads have turned Linux into a better OS than it was 3 years ago.

We use RedHat in all of our big corporate server farms. We like the 24X7X365 telephone support at only $1200 per year, and the fact that it has gradually become easier to install than windows.

If people want to play around with BSD and stuff as hobbyists, that great. Write your own for all I care.

But Linux has become a stable "big iron" OS for corporate servers, and that is what I care about, not its purity.

This is the ultimite what better then *. This thread will go forever. The best OS is the one you feel comfortable using. Yes some OS's have better things built into them I have to agree. But this rant about linux vs. BSD will never end because people Think their OS is more "l337" or more stable. Stability comes in the admin that runs the box. thats my
