This is the best way to do it in my opinion, And instead of setting 404 traps, put something like a very big clean gallery in place of your 404 page . Some domains i put 404 traps , but you also dont want to hurt a potential returning surfer by blazing them with popups.

Alot of newbies wont go to ANY other boards or resource centers, so i figured id drop it here.

i mean, this is a webmaster board right? why not try to help someone now and then?

well i don't know this guy lil2rich4u2, but my hat is off to him for reminding me to do this last week on all my domains.

and looks like i picked up about 5% of traffic, mostly from deliberate hack attempts.

and then i went around to some "well-known" high traffic sites run by people i consider to be sharpies, to see if they were redirecting their 404 traffic.

and i was surprised how many were not, just letting their 404s go to dead pages.

danni.com/dfajk4 yes, redirecting, good.
alsscan.com/sdfdfa dead page
webvirgins.com/sdfjadsl dead page
thewetlands.com/sdfjfla3 dead page

point is, you don't need to be a newbie to be reminded to use a good tip.

thanks lil2rich4u2 !

now the trick to this is, give them all spaced out numbers! for example:

domain.com/galleries/3/index.html
domain.com/galleries/3/3.html
domain.com/galleries/3/7.html
domain.com/galleries/3/12.html
domain.com/galleries/3/17.html
Sorry for bumping such an old thread but can this be done with AS (spaced numbered galleries)?

not sure actually. i know you can START from a specified number/letter but not sure if you can randomize it ... been some time since ive played with settings

basically you want to trick the surfer into thinking there is more free porn if he plays with the numbers .... then hit him with your 404 trap!

404 trap or any trap = BANNED

This applies to all my TGPs. You plain don't know all of them I am running.

So if you think this is kwel or makes you $$, think again. 404 traffic management is fine and important. You will make $. Traps means I lose total control of the surfers to my sites. It also leads to a pissed off surfer that won't come back.

Not being sarcastic, but why is a redirect like that a trap? If the surfer deliberately tries to type in a page that he wasn't linked to, whay is that a trap?

The subject of this thread is 404 traps. If you capture the 404 error and redirect to a console or two = no problem and smart. All your pages should. not all of mine do as we speak cause I moved to a new server for some sites and have to redue some .htaccess files.

If you put the surfer in a true trap, then that pisses me off as does any sort of malware. I have to fight this problem every day. Gallery submitters do all sorts of crazy things. Send you trojans, dial traps, console pages, galleries with no sponsor or recips (this one puzzles me, but happens daily), thumb links that lead to exit hell or traps. I use scripts and check manually.

As you could guess, I have plenty of defense setup on the PCs use to review galleries. To protect the suffer, I don't block some stuff so I know about it. Can't say exactly what I do, cause more than a few would send me shit to deal with. Have been beatup enough, that I usually recover fairly quick when a submitter sends me malware.

Right now I'm on GFY as I clean up a mess on another pc normally used for gallery review. In the end, sometimes a rebuild is required. No doubt I could be smarter to get through the maze. Ya do what ya have to do with what you know.

All this leads to a sensitive ban the mofo triger. Not always fair as the submitter may be new and not even aware of some of the issues.
