I use Gentoo on my desktop and Redhat 9 on my laptop.

Slackware without a doubt... Mandrake is good if you're totally green and want a bit of hand holding, but go Slack whenever you can. Debian's also a possibility if you want a bit of geek.

For desktop I would go with Mandrake or RedHat 9, they both seem to have nice, user friendly desktops. If you're a command line wiz I'd go with Debian.
