I have heard this kind of sentiment expressed by dozens of American posters many, many times and relating to virtually every conflict of the last 100 years. Quite frankly it's ignorant and it's irritating... and that's something quite separate from my personal political beliefs. It annoys me because it's wrong and blantly so.

Whether you agree with war or not and irrepespective of political views, a brief glance at Australia's military history shows that it is the one country the USA has been able to rely on as an ally in all conflicts since Australia became a soverign nation in 1901.

My brother is a Major in the Australian army and I am well aware of Australia's military history.

Another example: It seems to me that Americans are taught to believe that they won the Second World War single handedly. That's the impression I get from most US posters on GFY. But where would they have been without the Russians fighting the Germans on one front and the British on another. The Russians lost over 20 million miliary and civilians in WW2. Australians fought both in Europe and The Pacific during this time despite our tiny population. Northern Australia was bombed by the Japanese and we even had Japanese midget submarines in Sydney Harbour.

I'm just trying to set the record straight.

Speaking for myself...I am fully aware that the bulk of the German Army was arrayed against the Soviets. It was a joint effort...but a major contributer to the defeat of the Gemans was the American military industrial might...that supplied materials to all of the Allies involved...including the Soviets. Also while the Germans were fighting a two front war...actually three...so were the Americans.

To be proactive you have to play the "What if" game. To prevent terrorism you must anticipate events before they happen. As I said before North Korea is desperate for money. They also likely don't have many nukes at this point. I doubt they would give away their meal ticket or sell it for less than another state could pay. The possiblities that I named were just that. Possiblities. There are many many more possiblities as well for a brutal mad man with billions who hates you. As far as Saddam and Al Qaeda not liking each other. People who distrust and dislike each other have been known to put differences aside to take on a common enemy.

How would Russian troops have made it to Berlin without 400,000 American trucks? The US supplied Russia with millions of tons of food, thousands of railway cars, half a million rails, vast amounts of copper, millions of tons of oil and gas, hundreds of ships, thousands of fighter planes and bombers, hundreds of thousands of machine guns, millions of tons of steels (enough to produce 70,000 tanks!), hundreds of thousands of tons of aluminum, and much more than that. The US sent even more to Britain, three times as much in dollar volume. By the end of the war 29% of British supplies were coming to the US.

Also important is that Britain sent much of her supplies to Russia.

Without US supplies, Russian troops would have been starving, fighting without ammunition after not too long and walking to Berlin.

That being said, your point is valid. Without an Eastern front there would have been a greater concentration of troops in the Atlantic coastal region and D Day might not have succeeded.

I think that the popular American view is as correct as yours. The Americans probably won the war by supplying everyone and the end of the war would have been delayed for many years without an Eastern front and eliminating the Japanese.

My own view is that Hitler would have lost eventually anyway. He made so many strategic errors as the war went on that he sealed his fate. That was Hitler. He would become obsessed with non-standard military views such as "never retreat" and hold to them even though it hurt his over-all position. His great generals
time and time again were overruled on what were probable winning strategies.

If people like theking and I didn't debate them they wouldn't say anything at all. Speaking for myself, I enjoy the debate. Sometimes I even learn a few new things ;-)

I think JoeSixpack is correct in that Americans are largely ungrateful towards their past and present allies.

I?m pretty sure this has to do with the fact that most Americans feels they would win the wars anyway. This is very likely true.

However there is absolutely no such thing as token support. When the British, Australian, Canadians, or any other historical allies spend their tax dollars and send their boys to die they are every bit as deserving of the respect we expect for our own troops and military.

Always remember that when the Japanese bombed Pearl harbor, Canada and Australia immediately declared war on Japan.
