If you've switched from a CRT to an LCD
Are you pleased with your LCD for graphics work? With the latest models out they seem to look as good as CRT's.
My Viewsonic monitor started acting up this morning with the temperature display switching from 9300 to 6500 by itself. I thought it was a page code doing it at first, but it seems to be the monitor doing it. Going to go look at Sony and Samsung LCD's tonight. Any particular new models you'd recommend?

From experience I can say the Apple LCD's are excellent for Graphics. Not sure how they would fare on a non Macintosh system.

I'm guessing that money isn't an issue so yeah, take a look at the Apple flatscreens.

The employer at my previous job replaced the CRT monitor on my desk with an Apple Studio Display 17" after the CRT would shut down intermittently every 30 minutes, and it would take 5 minutes for it to become powered up again.
The LCD's much easier on the eyes if you're programming/dealing with text. I still prefer CRTs for color work however. Viewing angle is not an issue with CRTs, whereas even with the 17" the color and brightness shifts slightly based on your viewing angle. If you decide to go the LCD route, get one with a DVI video connector. The picture is much crisper, whereas the VGA cable is the weak link in picture quality. |

Viewing angles on LCDs used to suck really bad.
I switched from a 21" trinitron a few months ago to a 19" Samsung 191T. The viewing problem is still there somewhat, but if you look at a colored web page, the color difference between the top of the page and the bottom is virtually the same. It was good enough for me to make the change and I do a lot of design. Samsung gets a ![]()

At the office we have a lot of LCD's. A lot of people are complaining about the colors. Most of them do not display true 24 bit color. Some area's of the screen are brighter/darker, etc.
I own a Samsung SyncMaster 191T myself. All I can say it's the best money I have ever spent on computer equipment. It stresses the eyes a lot less. It's fucking sharp. It displays the colors very good. Viewing angle id good. It's excellent for graphics work. Just don't go too cheap with TFT's... BUT, if you work a lot with photo's, want to change exposure etc., sorry, no singe TFT can beat a CRT when it comes to color reproduction. |

I've got a Sony CPD-L181A Flat Screen. It's an older model..about 3 years old..but it's been a god send as far as much easier on the eyes.
And in the summertime..generates less heat too so you don't have to bake even more on hot summer days. |

1. Less radiation (CRT = Cancer... HELLO!) 2. Uses less space 3. Clean, sytlish look I did some research -- pretty much I decided to just go to Walmart and pick up a KDS -- I did plenty of research on it and it got great reviews... KDS is a pretty good company too from what I can remember. Walmart has a new one out now that's bigger -- 17" or something... I was in BestBuy though a couple of days ago and they had some real stylish looking LCD's... ![]() The biggest diff is the rendering of darker colors -- LCD just doesn't have true black (but very close to it) -- but I don't miss CRT one bit even when doing design... If you are into design, you got to figure that many users are on LCD now anyway so if you are on LCD too you're more likely to design for the larger market... |

I tried 3 different LCDs and ended up with Samnsung SyncMaster 191T (as did a few others on this thread). I can work a lot longer since it's easier on the eyes. The colors are a little off but close enough for editing. I still check things on my trusty 5 year old CRT from time to time and things look fine.
I tired the 17 inch Samsung and it didn't work for me. You need to use an LCD in its native mode or the images are very distroted. The text was just a little too small on the 17 inch. |

I stick with CRT monitors myself. I recently picked up a Black 19-inch Hitachi CM721F and it's beautiful. I thought about getting an LCD, but to me, I'd rather have the better picture than the smaller size. The thing sits on my desk anyways, it's not like I have to move it around every day.
PLUS the fact that the monitor was only $279 shipped is nice. I don't see myself paying double the price for a lesser quality display. |

1) Colors are off on an LCD...you just can't get the depth you experience with a good ol Trinitron. 2) I don't like the look of text on LCD's. It's sort of like a normal TV vs. a new plasma flat-screen TV -- you have to get use to it. I'll give the LCD monitor points for fatigue. I alway feel better after sitting in front of an LCD vs. a CRT. Sony has a new LCD which they put a glass screen over which makes the thing look a lot better. I have that Silicon Graphics 17" panoramic display, but it sits in the box which my Trinitron rests on, lol. If you're going to go with an LCD, that new Sony or the Apple can't be beat. |

Take a look at the NEC 1980sx. According to all reviews it has by far the best color reproduction to date. A lot better than the Samsung 191T that was top a year ago. Been photoshopping on the NEC myself for 3 months now and love it.
Forget Sony LCDs. Average quality, totally overpriced. |

I check out the LCD's every so often, and I'm not impressed with the quality yet. They still can't match my Sony Trinitron.
And I'd like to know why so many stores have their LCD's set up to display the in-store demo, and not hooked up to a computer for you to test out. That in itself is suspicious. |

I recently had to look for a replacement for my old 19" Trinitron and expected to buy another CRT. I came home with a Mitsubishi nxm76LCD 17" panel. I had a bad experience when I bought a panel about a year and a half ago...I only lasted 2 days with it before returning it. The difference between that panel and the new ones available now is night and day. There are still some issues with contrast and color depth but not enough to outweigh the benefits of perfect image clarity. If you want to see what the next generation of panels will look like go see a 17" iMac. They have the new DVI 2 panels and look amazing. |

I got a 15 inch apple lcd a couple years back and now have a 17 inch in my laptop and I would never use a CRT again. 10 seconds on a CRT with the shitty refresh flicker and my eyes are killing me. I could never switch back to a CRT, ever. My brightness is great and so is the color. I see things much better then other people do on their screens.

Well I've laid my Viewsonic and Nanao CRT's to rest and replaced them with a 17" Flat Panel LCD. Here are my observations after two days of use.
The claims that CRT's are superior to the new generation of LCD's are totally unfounded. I'm an image perfectionist freak and I'm tellng you flat out this flat panel 100% blows away my CRT's in every respect. The colors are absolutely gorgeous and beautifully saturated. Whoever is saying you don't have good color depth must not have seen one of the new generation panels. The colors are perfect. I even ran several DisplayMate image color tests and the results were better looking than on the CRT results. Text is sharper and crystal clear even at small font size. Video's and DVD look fantastic and now have more of a cinema quality. Refresh rates are fine. No motion blurring, ghosting, etc. Games look incredible with the brightness and color blends smooth and sweet. My other monitors were on anolog nVidia card and I have this new flat panel on analog and it looks as great as the DVI connected displays I saw at CompUSA. I'm thrilled I'm not subjecting my head to any more CRT radiation. God only knows what that did for all these years. No more eye fatigue at all. So everyone who thinks CRT's are better, I'm telling you LCD's have indeed surpassed them now.

I always preferred my desktop's CRT over the LCD on my laptop. Then I got a new Dell system with a 19" LCD and the clarity/colors are phenominal. I can't stand to look at either my CRT or the laptop LCD anymore.
