Zone Alarm anyone?

Anyone use this?

Just installed it a little over 12 hours ago
and it says:

1231 Intrusions have been blocked since install
12 of those have been high-rated

WTF is that a lot for 12 hours?

Sounds like a lot but a lot of it could simply be as Zone Alarm puts it "one of the millions of unsolicited commercial or network control messages that are routinely sent out over the Internet. Such unsolicited messages are often called Internet background noise."

ZA will send off a ton of false alarms. most of which are standard net probes, and they think it is a hacker trying to attack the pc or something, heh

I use Zone Alarm purely because it lets me know whenever a program is trying to access the Internet. But other than that it's slow and takes forever to start up. What other programs out there can do that same gateway thing to let me know when something's trying to call out?

every windows firewall program has that feature.

never used zone alarm, but i heard it's quite insecure, so i toss it in with things like black ice defender... the worst of the worst.

i like sygate's firewall, but that thing was a total bastard on my internet connection. it would just strait up block most of my connection/bandwidth. i'd be downloading something, and it would be blocking half the transfer. couldn't figure out why it was doing it, but fuck it, i tossed that trash out.

i have noticed tho since i've switched to cable that my firewall/router is being pounded like a redheaded stepchild (this has been up since friday... but past couple days has been insane - constant activity). not sure if it has to do with the virus, but i imagine that's the case now... i can't think of anything else. and it's not through traffic, i.e. it's just hitting the router and stopping.

really makes me wanna cough up the dough for a sonicwall or cisco firewall instead of the little one i'm running...

oh yeah, to answer your question, check out mcafee and symantec. both seem to have pretty decent AV and firewall setups. used to run both, but i'm a bit more partial to symantec.

and if you're running xp, turn on xp's built-in firewall as well. it seems to run pretty seemlessly, and by itself provides a decent amount of protection. but it doesn't hurt, switch it on with your software firewall as well.

Working tech support for a ISP zone alarm is my worst night mare. Especially if some one is running off a Dynamic Ip Address and it currupts. It will block all income and outgoing traffic....and even uninstalling it won't fix it and since everyone gets free version they call us cause zone labs won't touch it........and I tell them it Zone alarm and the insist they uninstalled it but the Reg Key keeps it active......

YES. everything i hear, the sonicwall products are the shiznit. probably similar to using a nice cisco firewall or something. they are purpose-built hardware, these aren't the NAT firewalls you get at circuit shitty. the cheapest i've found online for one i think was either $250 or $350. and this is for a pretty small version.

symantec also makes a hardware firewall box that i hear is pretty decent as well. and, symantec seems to know their security shit, so they would probably have a good product as well. again, you're starting in the $300's for soemthing like that.

but it's going to be a lot more secure than even something like netgear's fs318 firewall/router with stateful packet inspection and virus protection.

if you want to go secure, a high end firewall like a sonicwall, cisco or symantec are the way to go. but often times due to cost concerns, NAT firewalls for home usage are adequate. combine it with a good software firewall, and you should be reasonably safe.

yes that's a lot. but I'm sure it's logging all of the blocked ping requests from the... W32.Welchia.Worm

from the symantec site
Quote:
W32.Welchia.Worm does the following:
Attempts to download the DCOM RPC patch from Microsoft's Windows Update Web site, install it, and then reboot the computer.
Checks for active machines to infect by sending an ICMP echo request, or PING, which will result in increased ICMP traffic.
Attempts to remove W32.Blaster.Worm.
my firewall has been blocking close to 500 pings an hour

Consider this scenario:

If the firewall you bought or got as freeware never reported any so called "intrusion attempts", would you want to continue using it? Most people would think that it doesn't work, so they make you think that it's saving your life multiple times a day...

This is especially true for firewalls that you have to purchase a license for, why would you want to keep upgrading and feeding more money to the software vendor when it never says/does anything?

i like zonealram because it tells you every program that is accessing the net. You never know when you may download something from someone and the person also added their own keylogger
