![]() What's a good red wine?
How much do you usually spend on a bottle? I usually try stuff ~$10-$20 range... but I'd be willing to go higher if it was a strong recommendation ![]() I think I might be partial to merlots... |

wine is a great way to start a threesome! South African wine I think is the best. You could get a nice bottle for about $25.

I'd have to agree I love German wine the best when it comes to foreign stuff...but for domestic of course Cali produces the best... a good red? would depend on how you like it.... sweet? woody/oaky tasting? etc...

We buy excellent wine straight from the winery. If you have one in your area then I would highly recommend a visit. You can sample a wide boquet of wonderful flavors and aromas and make your decision then. It's really hard going to a "liquor" store (or something comparable) to buy wine when you personally haven't sampled it yourself.
My wine cellar is filled with wines that I enjoy as opposed to what other people enjoy. In fact, some of my most favorite wines are in the $10 - $15 price range believe it or not. I've enjoyed a $95 bottle of wine as well as a $15 bottle of wine. Like I said, go test and make your decision. I would recommend a wine festival if you can ever make it to one. Also, get yourself a very nice wine glass like a Riedel. I don't recommend the $80 price tag for this fine wine glass because I bought a comparable hand blown wine glass for only $10. You've excited my taste buds by this thread, I think I'll go to the wine cellar and extract a bottle of "Estate Red" from Vyneyard Crest. Don't try to look for it, I bought the last five cases of this delicious red wine so it's gone, forever.... ![]() Enjoy.... Penn

![]() ... but you've got me curious... what's the difference between a "fine" wineglass like Riedel VS a "normal" wine glass... or even what I currently drink out of: ![]() If I fall down, I'm don't break or spill -- what benefits does Riedel offer? |

Here's a look at a Riedel. Notice how tall the glass is as well as the open space within the glass. Exceptional for tasing and smelling... This wine glass retails for $120.00 ![]()

Merlots I'd look at anything from Jordan, Steele, Kenwood, Jarvis, Estancia, Clos du Bois.
If you're partial to merlot you should also have a look at some really good Zins or Meritage as well, I think you'd like them -- 7 Deadly Zins is FANTASTIC, all the vintners I mentioned above are great too, Justin Isoceles and Cain Five are two of my current favorites in the Meritage family - |

This way you will get an idea of what a good range of flavors and textures are from light and mild to big and super dry. It will also help with the headaches if you partake too merrily without knowing just how bad a red wine headache can be ;) |

I had the delightful experience of sampling an over the counter wine from Beringer the other day. Needless to say, I bought a case of it. It's reasonably priced at slightly under $20 but it's absolutely delicious and refreshing.
http://www.beringervineyards.com/jum...D=24&wineID=99 This is a beautiful, crisp and smoothe chardonnay. Highly recommended. Penn

If you really want to splurge, I'd look for a 97 (or better yet 95) Kenwood Artist Series Cab... or most any year of anything from Diamond Creek (especially the Volcanic, its just unreal all the way across the board) would be great choices from Cali -- There are some awesome Aussie wines, and some really good ones from Chile out there too. I don't know squat about French wines, sadly, that is a whole other study in itself... |
