Cops Outrun SkateBoard?
PEOPLE in the past have been charged with reckless riding of a bicycle and being drunk in charge of a horse but now a new charge has entered the legal lexicon - dangerous driving of a skateboard.
Gene Stewart proved a whizz on his board. Police alleged in Brisbane Magistrate's Court yesterday that Paddington skateboarder Gene Stewart veered dangerously across a busy road, almost causing a serious collision, within sight of a police breath test team. They said he then tried a getaway as outraged officers ran after his skateboard. The apprentice carpenter, 20, faced court charged with dangerous driving. And although magistrate Judith Daley had to admit she had never heard a case like it, she fined Stewart $200 for dangerous driving of a vehicle, namely a skateboard. The court was told Stewart caught the attention of police when he zipped along the footpath in Castlemaine St near Suncorp Stadium on his board. It was alleged he suddenly veered off the footpath across the street, causing a chain reaction of car drivers slamming on their brakes, and narrowly missing a police officer, who had to jump backwards to avoid being hit. The court was told police gave chase on foot and caught up with the speeding skater, who became abusive and argumentative and brandished his board at them. Stewart denied the police version of events and said he did not believe there were more than two cars on the street at the time. Ms Daley, who consulted legislation during the hearing, said she had never heard of someone charged with dangerous driving of a skateboard. She chastised Stewart for his behaviour after police caught up with him, after being told Stewart argued and became abusive before waving his arms while still holding the skateboard. Stewart was more co-operative in court, however, and even finished a sentence for the magistrate as she admonished him. Ms Daley was telling Stewart: "If you are ever arrested, you've just got to ... co-operate," Stewart offered. Ms Daley fined Stewart but did not record a conviction. She also ordered the skateboard, which police seized, be returned. The Courier-Mail

Years ago I used to work for none other than THRASHER Magazine. I would write and draw these wild stories about maniacs on skateboards. I had lots of fun and love skateboarding.
It's been quite a ride (literally) cause my old ass remembers when skateboards first were invented. This dude's adventure may seem amazing but I've seen stuff that defies physical sciences. Ah, the good ol' days. |

They used to be nuts here with the things. And ramming their way thru traffic was just one foolish thing they did.
Ahh the old life... when the guys made skateboards from one of our strapon skates and a board.

We didn't have half pipes then either. Just unfinished highways made with REAL asphalt not that baby stuff they use nowadays. Why you could fall off your skateboard back then and lose half the skin covering on your body and you'ld have to bring it home to feed the dog with. Waste not, want not! http://www.geocities.com/degen23/IHB/Pages/VDMisc.html This URL goes to a fan site that made stickers out of the skateboard comic I did and am publishing next year. |
