Master BETAS wanted........
Need to find a few BETA testers for a Desktop Based Search and Replace Utility I put together.... I have slammed this thing as hard as I can on the computers available to me, now I need input to what can be netter and what features I missed from a user group... Since this is a power user program, you are the kind of folks who can beat on it the way I need it beat on.
Total Control is a text file search and replace utility that can handle multiple search and replace across multiple files in one sweep. It allows cascading searches, can be case sensitive, can do wholeword matching, can do terms cataloguing.. and its fast as all get out..... The only limitation I have on it right now is I have limited the file size it can search to 16MB, which should handle almost any web, php, asp or other text files you need to maintain..If you are running webpages or scripts that go over 16MB then you have other problems that need more attention...lol.... I do not have much up in the support area for operating instructions, but it is fairly intuitive (I think), so if you have experience with software, it should be pretty straightforward... There is a switch on the main screen to turn backups on or off... If you run with backups enabled, the program will keep track of all changes and allow you to restore original files at the push of a button.... I need BETA testers across all windows platforms.... I have the db set up to allow 5 testers for each platform, so once they fill up, if you want in you just need to contact me and convince me why I need you as a tester...lol.. The reward for this is a fully registered copy of the program when/if it is released to the public... and access to other things I am currently working on.... It also gives you the chance to be in on the groundfloor providing input as to how you would like to see a program look, feel and operate... One last benefit to you is that when the next processor goes out, or the next sponsor goes out, you are prepared with a tool that can rip through thousands of pages doing multiple search and replaces for you accurately in amazingly short periods of time. The url for signing up is http://www.hatterasdesigns.com This is the first piece of software I have released for public consumption, however, it is far from my first piece of software. I have been working with computers since 1974 and have been writing software (across many different platforms) since 1982. Most of the systems I have designed and coded are proprietary database systems in use by various corporations. I have also designed many many user interfaces both online and stand alone to those database systems. I have written mailing systems, insurance systems, reservation systems, warehousing systems, website and content management systems and bunches of others..... Many of the programs I wrote 10+ years ago are still in use today... The Total Control utilities are basically a stripping out of various tools that I have within my custom web management system... I plan to release at least 5 or 6 different utility programs for the desktop across the next year.... At the same time I am working on server side versions (for the big guys) of all of the same utilities.... Last night, just out of curiosity, I wanted to give the program a "realistic" test, the kind that would reflect how the kind of stuff a user might actually feed it... So, I copied my wife's mainstream jewelry site (http://www.paperjewels.com) and then I made multiple copies ofeach page (576 pages all together I think). I then set up a cascading search and replace of 6 terms.... First I had it change all occurences of her email address to a new email address. Then I had it change all occurence of the site's logo url (http://www.paperjewels.com/logo_color.jpg) to a new url (http://www.mynewdomain.com/logo_large.jpg). third I had it change all occurences of the site domain (paperjewels.com) to a new domain (mynewjewles.com) fourth, I took a line from our standard shopping cart form (NAME="amount" VALUE="25.00">) which should be in any items priced at 25.00 and raised the price to 30.00 (NAME="amount" VALUE="30.00">) fifth and sixth I attempted to change any occurences of $25.00 or $ 25.00 to $30.00 (I inadvertently left off (25.00 without the dollar sign in my search terms do I actually missed most of the price changes although all the cart lines did get changed) The program made 19872 changes to 576 files in just under 6 minutes accurately (I have the before and after files to prove it)... and gave me backups of all the original files to boot. Now, this was on a P3-600 running windows 98se with 512mbs of ram..... So, on a faster box with a newer OS, it should see even better results... But that is what I need BETA testers for..lol... thanx in advance for any help P.S. here is the top part of the results report from last nights run... I made a slight edit to protect my wife's email addy...
