Is it cruel to boil lobsters alive?

?As an invertebrate zoologist who has studied crustaceans for a number of years, I can tell you the lobster has a rather sophisticated nervous system that, among other things, allows it to sense actions that will cause it harm. ? [Lobsters] can, I am sure, sense pain.?
?Jaren G. Horsley, Ph.D.

Lobsters may even feel more pain than we would in similar situations. One popular food magazine recently suggested cutting live lobsters in half before tossing them on the grill (a recipe that?s ?not for the squeamish,? the magazine warned), and more than one chef has been known to slice and dice lobsters before cooking them. But, says invertebrate zoologist Jaren G. Horsley, ?The lobster does not have an autonomic nervous system that puts it into a state of shock when it is harmed. It probably feels itself being cut. ... I think the lobster is in a great deal of pain from being cut open ... [and] feels all the pain until its nervous system is destroyed? during cooking.

Don?t heat up the water just yet, though. Anyone who has ever boiled a lobster alive can attest to the fact that when dropped into scalding water, lobsters whip their bodies wildly and scrape the sides of the pot in a desperate attempt to escape. In the journal Science, researcher Gordon Gunter described this method of killing lobsters as ?unnecessary torture.?

In fact, PETA has consulted with many marine biologists about the most humane way to kill a lobster. While the experts couldn?t seem to agree on which method is best, they do agree that there really is no humane way to kill these sensitive and unusual animals.

Fuckers taste good, though.

people always cry about lobsters feeling pain from the 5 seconds before they die when you boil them.... but never seem to mention in the grocery store when they sit in a tank for a week with no food and starve because if they are fed they shit in the tank and make the water dirty.

I've bought some lobsters and put them back in the ocean before.

We live in a fucked up world where everything has to eat something else to stay alive unfortunately. I was watching a show showing how lobsters kill to eat so its not like they don't inflict pain and death on other creatures as well.

I have a hard time dealing with a lot of it. But what can we do?

The worldwide number of animals killed for food in 2000 was 45 billion, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization. This included 306 million cattle, buffalo, and calves, 1.2 billion pigs, 795 million sheep and goats, and 42.7 billion chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese. The figures exclude some small countries and 'non-slaughter' deaths, which are generally not reported.

These Figures Do Not Include Fish.

So about 150 Million animals are slaughtered every day to feed the world. That's over 6 Million per hour. 100,000 per minute.

my thoughts exactly

though I was thinking more along the lines of... the lobster lives in the water, we live in the air, so it'd be a bit like getting stuck in an oven and roasted to death.

Aren't I glad I'm higher up in the food chain.

I love lobster.
I love oysters.
I don't give a rats ass how they're prepared.

I don't get emotional towards fish, reptiles, shellfish or birds. However I don't think I would be able to kill a cow myself for a steak. (unless my survival depended on it).

LOL, to save bullets we used to whack pigs with a hammer to knock 'em out before slitting their throats. One huge fucker woke up too soon once...it was a massive fight, and very messy.

it's time for someone to inbed the song "Rock Lobster"

when a shark attacks a poor little sealion.. and tosses him around a bit then goes off and waits for him to die... do you think the sealion feels no pain?

How about when a lion attacks a zebra and starts eating it while still alive.... it may be sad for the little hard shell sea goers but it's the way the food chain works.... if you wanna pick on someone, go after those freeking asians that eat the monkey brains right out of the monkeys head while it's still allive.....

Also read articles about the pain factor hooking fish in the mouth when fishing. I don't think there is a humane way to kill anything in the food chain.

If we used lethal injections for food as a humane death then there would be cancer warnings on the chemicals we injest afterwards :-)

Could lead to stronger drugs :-)

Actually, there's a way to do it that doesn't hurt them. Fill up your sink with VERY cold water (a little ice helps), then dizzolve as much salt in the water as it will hold, (if you keep stirring and no more will be absorbed, it will start to settle on the bottom), Put the lobster in, and in a few minutes, the high salinity and cold will put it to sleep. Put the now unconcious, limp lobster in the boiling water and it will be dead before it wakes up.

I was a Zoology major.

I duno about that whole salt thing... friend of mine has a salt water tank... when he 1st set it up, another friend brought over this star fish he found in the ocean..... they put it in there and the salt salinity was way too high and the poor little star fish just fell apart.. his legs and stuff just fell off....

I give him hell about it all the time, every time I go over I have to check to make sure there isnt a dead fish floating at the top of the tank..

I thought lobsters lived in cold salt water most of the time?

lately i have been think i no longer want to eat animals.

its not that i am against meat or fur or any of that peta shit, I have hunted both with guns and bow and arrows my entire life and come from a hunting family.

I have just begun thinking about the health aspects of things.

I think I am going to slack off meat, its starting to gross me out.

I eat chicken quite often. Filthy, disgusting pen grown things.
cow - horrible beasts.
pig - disgusting little guys, but cute

the more things i list that I eat, it starts to gross me out.

eh fuck it, its breakfast time, im gonna go have some bacon and eggs

I worked in a restaurant once and saw how they prepared baked stuffed lobster.

They put the lobster on it's back while it's still alive and take a huge knife and slice him open, reach inside with their fingers and scrape out all the crap from the inside, then they put stuffing inside and put the lobster in the oven, while it's still moving around. It's nasty to watch.

You want to talk about cruel.....you should see how Veal calves are raised. I'm a total carnivore/omnivore, and I LOVE beef, but I won't eat Veal. They leave them in a tiny dark box, so small that they can't turn around. They feed them diurettics and leave them standing knee-deep in their own feaces in the dark until they kill them a few months later.

I have no problem killing to eat, I'm just another part of the food chain animals are eating each other by the billions each day, but that's over the top!

Killing animals for any reason is cruel. I've petitioned to my Senators and Representatives several times about creating a bill to halt the EXECUTION of animals. No luck yet.

Anyone interested in helping me? I have templates ready...

another way is to put them in a pot of booze and let them get drunk first to dull the pain.

Put some of you crybabies in a time machine and send you back to the stone age and see how you survive. You'd soon realize that plants and animals are part of nature, and are there for the survival of all species. Take deer for example. People nowadays say "we don't need to hunt deer, we have plenty of meat in supermarkets! Why do we need to hunt the poor deer? Leave them alone!!!"

So we leave them alone.

Then, in a few years, when people are hitting deer left and right on the highways causing our family members to be killed or maimed etc, those same fucktoids cry out "Those damned deer!! We need to DO something about them!!

Stop crying over stupid shit like basic human existance and common sense. People have been catching and cooking lobster for thousands of years. Thousands of years. That figure again was thousands.
Of years.

It's going to tough trying to arrest everything from Robins and sparrows, tunas, eels, dragonflies, cats, whales, etc, etc, etc....

That's my point Lane. No matter what you eat, something has to die and suffer for you to live.

I'm sure thousands of years from now everything we consume to sustain ourselves will be synthetic since the earth won't be able to support that many people the way we do it now by killing billions of animals.

I'm a vegetarian as much as possible. I do eat meat on a limited basis since I found all veggie was not great for your health. Like Fletch posted though it is totally gross when you think about what you're really putting in your mouth.

I usually put them in my garage, with the door closed and the engines of my bikes and car running for about an hour, or take them out to the desert and give them a 15 minute head start and hunt them down with my .22
