Btw, an interesting fact I found out when reading up about hunting legislation:

Hitler?s first dictatorial act, after the passing of the Enabling Act (1933) was to regulate the cooking of lobsters (he was distressed by their screams when tossed into boiling water). Only then did he abolish free trade unions.

http://www.huntfacts.com/hitler.htm

Not trying to use this to take from or give to either arguement, but I found it pretty strange.

Interesting topic - lol

Saw something about this on the Discovery Channel just a week or so ago. They say that lobsters HAVE to be boiled alive because they have some sort of bacteria that takes hold and spreads quickly if they are killed first.

Also - they DON'T scream. The guy said that the noise people hear is air pockets filling with water when they are submerged. He says you can put them into normal temp water and hear the same thing. It's just our own little *guilt trip* for boiling something alive that makes us think that sound is a scream.

Personally I don't like lobster - but hub loves the stuff. My daughter is the type that wants to buy the lobsters at the grocery store and set them free. Kinda hard to do in the middle of the desert though - I think he'd flip his claw at you and say "just boil me dammit!" lol

:thumbsup

Lobsters are incapable of screaming.

The sound that you hear is caused by the lobster's bodily fluids turning to steam and escaping its shell.

Of course its cruel to boil a lobster alive. Its also cruel to boil puppies, kittens, and people alive. People tend to sympathize with cute animals, but just about anything with a nervous system can experience pain.

wether we like it or not that is what is called the food chain. Big fish eats smaller fish, bigger fish eats big fish.

I'll ask them tonight for you what they think about it

Actually the bigger problem with meat these days is all the antibiotics and hormones that are pumped into the animals, not to mention the food and water the animals are fed are contaminated a lot of times.

Same goes for fruits and vegetables. Pesticides and fertilizers are sprayed on plants, the soil used to grow vegetables has been overused it no longer contains the minerals to produce healthy plants naturally. Then the produce is sprayed with wax to make them look better.

If you don't think these chemicals get into your hahahaha you are dead wrong. 100 years ago cancer, diabetes, etc were virtually unheard of in young people, now its almost at epidemic proportions.

Organic is the only way to really eat healthy.

Lucy 04-13-2004 09:24 AM

Unfortunately, even organic foods can be contaminated by genetically modified foods. Cross polination is a reality.

off topic...how do these threads come alive after such a long time<?

True, nothing is perfect, but there are pretty strict guidelines for something to be certified organic. For meat the guidelines are:

* No pesticides, antibiotics or hormones.

* 100% certified organic feed and pasture, which means no genetically modified foods seeds or feeds or and is raised without herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

* No nitrates, nitrites or preservatives.

* Animals are never fed animal by-products.

* Freedom of movement for animals, with full access to the outdoors. Humane treatment of animals (defined by the Humane Society of the United States.)

* Farm and farm records are inspected every year by a third party to ensure the standards are being enforced.

another example of human barbarism... it pains me

ironlung 01-03-2005 07:09 PM

we definitely have our teeth for chewing through meat but i think there is a humane way to kill every animal

Vitasoy 01-03-2005 07:11 PM

Nah, Unless it's your pet. It's seafood :)

xclusive 01-03-2005 07:11 PM

By who ?

I don't think lobsters get eaten.

wedouglas 01-03-2005 07:20 PM

ehh i would never go hunting or such, but i have no problem buying dead animals to eat. its part of life. survival is necessary. even your cute dog would rip apart a small animal if it needed food and you should too.

its not that i am against meat or fur or any of that peta shit, I have hunted both with guns and bow and arrows my entire life and come from a hunting family.

I have just begun thinking about the health aspects of things.

I think I am going to slack off meat, its starting to gross me out.

I eat chicken quite often. Filthy, disgusting pen grown things.
cow - horrible beasts.
pig - disgusting little guys, but cute

the more things i list that I eat, it starts to gross me out.

eh fuck it, its breakfast time, im gonna go have some bacon and eggs

:winkwink:

I gave up meat 15 years ago (I do eat occasional seafood). My motivation was strictly health motivated. Modern meat "manufacture" involves too many steroids, anti-biotics and people with bad production techniques (intentional or not). I fully believe eating meat weakens your immune system.

At least you gave it up for health reasons. I don't like it when people call themseleves vegetarians and still eat seafood. :(

Or "animal rights" people who don't eat animals but still wear leather.

mmmmmm, lobster. No, it isnt cruel to cook food.

I ate king crab legs for dinner tonight. Twas delicious.

It never ceases to amaze me that some people think that some animals don't feel pain. I actually have a lot of "veggie" buddies who think FISH and INSECTS don't feel pain--hence, they are 'vegetarian' except for seafood. LOL.

I'm not a flaming vegan or anything but let's be real and acknowledge that, yes--all animals can feel pain so let's not use any misunderstanding of that fact as a justification for eating their flesh.

MetaMan 01-03-2005 09:46 PM

IT IS A FUCKING LOBSTER? do u peolpe eat meat? its all the same omg hahaha.

theadulthub 01-04-2005 08:21 AM

actually there is a reason why they are killed in this manner which nobody seems to have mentioned. As soon as a lobster dies it releases a chemical which damages the flesh making it much much tougher to eat, hence they are killed and cooked at the same time.

I do not agree with it, it's horrible. But i bet loads of you eat mcdonalds. or chicken breasts from your supermarket. Now you tell me who's had the worse existence?
The lobster who lives his life for free and then dies painfully in several seconds or the chicken trapped in a cage so small it cant move and...well you get the picture.
