.vob files to mpeg clips
Ok so I have some DVDs i want to make mpeg clips of. I used the program DVD Encryptor to rip the .vob files from the DVD to my hard drive. Now i have 8 .vob files on there, and what i want to do is make clips of each short scene in mpg format that I can upload to our server and offer to our members in the form of downloadable mpgs. I have heard that all i have to do now is change the file extention from .vob to .mpg and then cut up the clips with software. So i changed the .vob extension to .mpg, and played it using windows media player, and it played fine. but when i went to cut it up, the audio was missing. can anyone help to figure out what i need to do to get the audio in there too? the audio was there before i cut the mpg clip up, but missing after. do i need to take more steps? any and all help is appreciated.

lol, just kidding.
Search around on google for VOB to AVI, then AVI to MPEG. |

At the least you will need something that can extract the M2V video and AC3 (or MP2) audio streams. However, the video will be in MPEG-2 format, so you will probably need to re-encode to MPEG-1 or WMV.
If your program to split clips is already re-encoding, and you're not hearing the audio, it may be because the stream is AC3 and it only supports MP2. What would I use for the task? a) DVD2AVI - reads a VOB, converts AC3 or MP2 to WAV, and passes MPEG-2 frames to: b) tmpgenc - encodes MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 |

BTW DVD2AVI + tmpgenc can convert from MPEG-2 to MPEG-1 without needing to save to AVI. Just do "Save project", which will decode the audio to WAV, then load the .D2V as your video source in tmpgenc. Then DVD2AVI passes the frames in realtime to tmpgenc, with no need for an intermediate decode to AVI stage.
tmpgenc can also read VOBs directly, but it cannot decode AC3 audio. |
