crt v. lcd questions!

the new lcd screens are starting to reach performance levels ~= crt monitors.

but which type works better at a higher screen frequency?
also, how do i coordinate my graphics card and the frequency rate set at the monitor?

i want to run at the absolute highest screen frequency possible.

advice?

thx

Well, you can configure the frequency rate in the Control Panel, it's not hard at all.

As for the LCD, what's your budget?

I just bought the 17 Inch Sony flat panel and am very happy with it. I paid about 600 Euro for it.

if you spend a LOT of time in front of your screen, fuck the price and go for LCD. CRT will eventually make you blind. with LCD, you'll get a few extra years ;)

Are you talking about resolution or refresh rate?

If you need to run at REALLY high resolution, CRT is still the way to go. LCD can't compare yet.

That dell I'm not positive on. They don't have shit for specs listed, namely native resolution. Max resolution doesn't mean shit for LCD's, as you can only run them in native mode w/ any kind of decent video quality.

The leader in LCD tech now is Samsung. If 1280x1024 is good enough for you, than by ALL means pick up a 191t for rather cheap these days (great monitor), or it's predecessor (model # escapes me) for probably around $800. Fucking awesome panels, the best you can buy.

Remember, don't look at max res. Native resolution is what you'll be running at, and in native mode, a high-end LCD will beat any CRT hands down in terms of video quality imo.

Stay away from Sony too. Their CRT's rock, but their LCD's are pretty much shit. Samsung all the way (most Dell's are actually regbadged samsungs of various flavors)

peace,

-Phil

Hrm, maybe I misread..

If you're talking refresh rate I wouldn't worry much. LCD and CRT refresh rate are not comparable.

For example I run this 191T @ 60htz here, and it looks perfect. I finally don't get headaches.

But, when I ran CRT's I HAD to be at 80htz+ or I could "see" the refreshes taking place, and it would drive me up a wall with the worst headaches imagineable. Working on others computers at their houses would make me want to rip my hair out, it's amazing the shitty monitors out there!

So.. I'm very refresh rate sensitive.. Which is another reason I went with LCD.

Or.. you could mean response time (i.e. how long it takes one pixel to change all the way from say white to full black), which is something else entirely..

What exactly are you trying to do with it? Gaming?

I have 2 Samsungs. The 191T is by far the best monitor I have seen. You can get these for under $700

hey,here's the deal-

we are doing some very hq printing and from what i've read with ps7, we can extract even higher quality if the monitor refreshes at a higher frequency.

Samsung's monitors are the best I've seen, though I'm still on CRTs but have been seriously considering hopping over to LCDs.

is there any LCD that has a pixel response rate comparable to crt? i'm not planning on getting one until they get to that level. i don't like seeing the trail of the mouse pointer, or pictures going on top of eachother on movies.

191T is what you're looking for.. I watch movies all the time, and play games as well. I don't notice a difference in response time.

The 191T actually was breakthrough in this regard...

I would suggest if you're worried about it, to go pick one up from best buy. It's more expensive by like $200 or so, but if you don't like it you can return it.

I did this, and paid $850 at the local store. Might be cheaper now.

i agree with samsung, they make fucking top-notch products. my dad's got a couple older samsung lcd's, they fucking rock. i've got a samsung crt, and it's nuts.

although i have been looking at the professional series 20" lcd by veiwsonic. one of the few out there that will run 1600x1280 in native res. i'm pretty much spoiled to use that, so imma probably do one of those. they're $2000+ tho, so until i'm interested in spending that on a new lcd, my crt stays.

or, see if samsung comes out with something new sometime soon..
