Senate Panel Votes To Ban CC's For Gaming & Adds Jail Time

Senate Panel Approves Internet--Gambling Ban

WASHINGTON - A Senate committee on Thursday voted to outlaw credit-card payments to Internet casinos, in a move designed to choke the offshore gambling sites that draw billions of dollars from U.S. customers.

The Senate Banking Committee unanimously approved the bill in a brief session with no debate, a marked contrast to the extended, acrimonious debates in the House of Representatives before that body approved a similar bill last month.

Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby said online casinos evade the reach of U.S. states that typically have regulated "bricks and mortar" gambling operations, requiring the federal government to step in. Internet casinos encourage pathological gambling and enable children to participate, he said.

"While gambling has always been subject to state regulation and should remain so, there is no way for the states to effectively control the reach of the Internet at this time," Shelby said.

Most Internet gambling is already illegal under U.S. and state laws, but those laws have little power over the 1,800 offshore gambling sites that are expected to take in $2 billion from residents this year.

Lawmakers have instead sought to prevent credit-card companies and payment systems such as PayPal to block money transfers to online gambling sites. Credit-card issuers, stung by disputed charges, now voluntarily block roughly four out of five online gambling payments.

Violators would face fines and up to 5 years in prison, in contrast to the House version that contains no criminal penalties.

The bill would not apply to horse racing, dog racing or other remote-betting operations already approved by states and American Indian tribes.

Casino operator MGM Mirage MGG.N had sought to develop an online casino that could check visitors' ages and locations to ensure they complied with state regulations, but recently abandoned the effort, citing an uncertain legal climate.

Well, we at least need some U.S. online casinos to keep that $2 billion in the country if we can't send it offshore.

Saw that yesterday here:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...net_gambling_2

I would of never dared post this news here, by fear of again being called an Anti-US or an American hater, or a conspiracy freak...

Good think your gov is more worried about on-line gamblers than the 3.5 million lost jobs or the billions of deficit.

Oh well, lets raise the terror alert level...

but on the other hand, will it really change anything, if Credit-card issuers, stung by disputed charges, now voluntarily block roughly four out of five online gambling payments.

It isn't like US states are collecting tax revenue they would usually get from brick and mortar gambling casinos. Although sucks for a lot of you, it on the other hand only makes sense.

What about iif they would say the same for adult sites .... like you cannot use your credit card to join foreign sites...

Maybe newstands and sexshops in the US would like that... and the state would collect it's taxes...

Oups, could put you out of business...

But am I FOR heavy government regulations.

Oh? so develop in which way it is different.... I have a vague impression that Visa and the gov are actually restricting usage of credit cards for adult sites...

Or maybe it was for religious donations.. can be confused sometimes....

So, the difference?

Using credit for holidays has always scared me. I don't mind if they make a law.

PS: if you can't pay for your holiday, you should be working or at the less stay home!

2nd PS: using a credit card to gamble on the net doesn't mean you are using "borrowed" credit, just that dollar bills don't fit in he cd drive.

Good.

Now there will be less US people who will fuck their credit cards and their credit up by gambling online and their cards will be clean and not overdrawn and they will be able to join adult sites and gratify themselves in a healthier way...

Good news for adult biz IMO

Think about how many new young americans got their first credit card today...

Their new card should come with this on it - "This card will not work on Gambling sites and if you try and join one we will cancel your card"

Keep it clean so you can jerk off fools!

Well one is gambling, it is a totally different buisness, Sex is only linked to it in a way to sell the entertainment in bring in gamblers.

You bet money to make money. You don't spend money for a product or service.

The cut down on the adult buisness lately by Visa is mostly on an attack on what is seen as what could be unfair buisness practices of kind of fooling the customer into something they didn't really want like a bunch of $40 checked cross sales, or advertising something as free when the small print admits a $40 charge will be incured. The sales tactics are ones with the idea of confusing the customer.

Gambling is connected to way more in the idea of Tax, charities, and tourism.

It is already illegal for people to buy certain porn with their credit card in certain countries and states. Certain forms of hardcore and anal are outlawed, along with the obvious forced, underage, and beastality crap.
