12" on a 1028x768 wouldn't be too bad, you can live with it... But for me, I couldn't stand it. I'm too used to 1600 rez's on 19" monitors.

personally i'd have to opt for dell's 15.4" screen with the high res. 12" screen would suck for work . email and icq and surfing would be ok, but i couldn't get any work done on that.

I have a Sager notebook that simply is nothing short of awesome. Sager is made by Clevo, the same manufacturer that sells notebooks to Alienware before Alienaware paints them in those cool colors. I have the top-of-the line model right here Sager 8887

1GB Ram, 128MB Video, 3.06 processor, DVD burner., balh blah blah... I use to own a Dell Inspiron, this thing makes it look like an old Atari 800. Oh yea...16.1" screen...1600x resolution...built in wireless card...built in MP3 player that detaches and goes to the gym with me. It fucking kicks ass...

a 12" screen isn't bad for travelling or checking your mail. i have a 12" powerbook and it is very light and small. 10" wide and probably a pound or so.

editing large images and building pages is a pain in the ass on this thing though. i usually have to hook it up to my studio display or use my other workstation.

every machine has its function. a laptop's function is portability and a 12" laptop is the ultimate portable.

if you want a pc laptop and don't mind it being 7 pounds, sagger is the best for the money. i used to have one. nice machines. lots of plugs and options.

did i mention powerbooks come equipped with wireless and bluetooth? shameless plug...

this 12" powerbook is the best laptop i've ever owned. having built-in wireless is damn convenient. having built-in bluetooth is great because it connects to the net through my bluetooth equipped cellphone.

i code and work on this thing all over the place. at 10" wide and an inch thick, its small enough to throw in my bag without having to carry a huge laptop bag. its like carrying a thin textbook...

you should go look at one if you're bored someday...

consider an ibm. i can't remember, the t series, and maybe the x or r series. very small units, good displays, pretty competitve pricing. ibm kicks serious ass, to boot. you can get them pretty small, as well.

btw... so what's the deal with these sagers? i was going to get a dell 8500, but these offer a lot more for less. how's their reliability? i definitely need something reliable, but i need a *lot* of machine as well to work on the road. what's their longevity and stuff?

hrm... i dunno. i'll think about it. dell, ibm or sager/alienware. hrm. ibm's don't break, but the video is kinda lacking, dell's are a little cheaper than ibms but break, and i know little about the sagers but they sound nice. 'cept they're a lot heavier than the others..

i also noticed the sagers on the site is only 1280x1024 on the 16" screen, where the alienware has 1600 on a 15 uxga. i need the uxga, maybe sager would build something a little more custom? 1280 isn't good enough, i need at least 1440...

although another thing to consider, is if the sagers are that heavy, i could just go with a G series ibm. about the same weight/size, shitload of features, but kinda large and bulky. ibm is finally catching up with 64mb ati video and touchpads, so they're coming along nicely...

Take a look at the Sony Vaio Series if you interested in a top Quality Mini.

I have been checking out the new Toshiba for a week or so. It's nice but it's a bit bulky and the P4 in that case has to get hot enough to make an omlet on. But, I am kinda excited about the HT option being turned on.

Here's a better, smaller and faster 3.06 laptop http://www.hypersonic-pc.com/2001/index.asp

It's a bit smaller and lighter than the Toshiba and you can add a 7200 rpm 60 gig drive in it which is something I rarely see in a laptop.

I am still going to wait a month or two and see what's new for the holiday season.

if you'll go for an 12" why not get a tablet pc like toshiba portege 3500 or get the the new centrino cpu'd ones ... they're light and goes for hours on battery. and tabletpc are so cool. but i prefer sub notebooks for lightweight and space saving on my trip... i had a p2000 nowgoing for a p5000 from Fujitsu computers...
