Does your state have a sales tax?

Here we don't.

But most people don't know that. We have instead, a General Excise Tax.... which is 4.5% of your gross for the privelege of doing business in the state, filed semi-annually, quarterly, or monthly, depending on your tax liability. The only nice part about it is, it is allowed to pass that onto to end customer. So consumers see it simply as tax and assume it's sales tax... even though they are in reality, paying for your business license. Kind of an interesting system I thought.

Doesn't work out for some businesses, like a realtor for example... businesses of that type would look stupid charging the homebuyer a 4.5% GE tax... but for retail, it works.

We also have something called a Use Tax... which is, anything you have shipped in from out of state, hardware, software, office supplies, whatever.... unless you are a wholesaler, you have to pay a use tax on that stuff. Can't remember exactly the amount, but I think it's around 2% of the value.

Yes we have a sales tax, varies by county. California here, our counties is currenty 7.25%

We then also have fucking taxes on gas, on hotels, and other shit that is then retaxed at 7.25%

Then there is the dairy conspiracy which makes it so you can not sell milk for less than a certain price even with coupons.

Depends on the county Amp. LA for example is higher than Butte. Each county can adjust their sales tax at its own accord.

Hi,

We are one of 3-4 states that have no sales tax at all.

Works good for us selling products, as down the road I belive online stores will have to charge sales tax..

Yup thankfully I am right next to Oregon so if I need to make a big ass retail purchase I just take a small drive and pay no sales tax.

another reason I kinda like the GE tax we have versus a sales tax. With the GE tax, since everything I do is exported out of state, I'm totally exempt. I still have to file though. But if I make any sales to anyone within the state, I either have to pass it through or eat the 4.5

When I first moved to California we needed to stay in a hotel for a couple nights. We were charged for the electricity we used. Not really a tax, but I found it pretty funny nonetheless.

We've had sales tax as long as I can remember and they just jacked it up a penny without a vote from us again. They tax everything they can now including services that used to be exempt. Hotel-motel taxes, conventions, shows, you name it.

I my state it's 7%, but 6% for food. There also there is a county sales tax of 2.75%. So I'm paying 9.75% sales tax.

I can testify to that. Oregon is fucking fanatical about speeding.

My home state has neither income nor sales tax. The only broad-based tax residents pay is property tax. All other major taxation is targetted at businesses (especially ones owned out of state) and tourism-- the Rooms and Meals tax. It works out pretty well.

Here in New Mexico, we have a Gross Receipts Tax, but it doesn't apply to out of state sales or internet ones either (yet).

It works similar to a Sales Tax, but sales tax is specifically levied on the customer by the gov't, the retailer is merely passing it through themselves.

Gross Receipts is levied on the retailer (who does have the right to pass it on to the consumer).

Slight difference in usage, but effectively the same in most cases.

In Albuquerque, the tax is 5.8125%, we also have a State Tax as well.

I thought this was a good thread.... funny how the threads with actual information about stuff remain virtually dead, and the threads about shaving asshole hair seem to rise to the top.
