He was out of the home and staying with a friend of my family by the time I started giving him reading lessons. They thought of me because they knew I was a bookworm. Also the friends of the family he stayed with for a couple of years got him involved in a UU church, and various people took him under their wing.

Anyway, all things considered, the kid is doing remarkably well now. He's 17, normal weight (he was morbidly obese & hypertense at 14), caught up to his grade level in school, and making good grades.

His parents were just despicable. I had alot of long conversations with him, and he is probably the worst abuse case I've ever heard of... and it wasn't physical at all. They never laid a hand on him apparently, but they mindfucked him and neglected him so badly that he would have been in the ground by 20 had he continued on the path they set him in.

Its probably for the best... your blood pressure will stay under control now :thumbsup

Organized religion...especially the fundamentalist Baptist breed. It seems to automatically deduct 25 IQ points from every follower at baptism and stunt their intellectual growth.

The biggest thing for me, however, is child abuse, specifically sexual abuse. I get so angry that I can't think straight. If I had my way, each and every person who touched a child for their own sexual gratification would be skinned with a straight-razor and given a nice lemon-juice bath to soften them up before a nice kerosene bath...and then I'd drop in a match.

Ignorance was the first thing that came to my mind (um, no double entendre intended there...) but then I decided there's simple ignorance, which simply means one is unaware of certain things (which, obviously, we all are); and stubborn ignorance, in which one refuses to see the truth, accept education, or even attempt to understand an alternate point of view, etc. etc. etc. Stubborn ignorance pisses me right the hell off.
