I got a younger friend of mine that called me today with a girlfriend problem.

They both work. He's in corporate sales. She's a teacher. They've been seeing each other for about a year. Usually he pays when they go out to eat, but often they'll split the tab. She gave him the "I don't think its right that you still let me pickup half the tab" speech yesterday and they got into a big fight over it and she hung up on him.

I would never have a girl pay the bill or even half the bill. I told him that the guy should always pay, but he said I was old fashioned and its not like that anymore and a lot of young couples split restaurant bills down the middle nowadays, even after going out for a while. He also just took her on a cruise and had her chip in for it.

What are your thoughts?

I'd rather pay it myself. BUT, as a part of "equal rights", she should pay half the tab as well, and even buy dinners.

Oh, and your friend didn't "take her on a cruise". They went on one together.

I normally pay for everything, too.

But some chick starting a fight because for a year she's paid part of the tab some of the time sounds like a pain in the ass.

for me i guess it depends on the girl. like, when we go out to dinner, or just go grab some grub, generally one of us pays. generally switch it up, if one of us doesn't have any cash, the other pays, or if it's just grub sometimes we both pay, whatever. it varies, and stays fairly even, although i generally pay for the nice "dinners out" and stuff.

For the last year or so I have been dating one girl on a very regular basis. What I have seen is this:

When she offers to take me out, she orders a normal meal and drinks water with lemon and a diet pepsi. When she knows that I am going to pay, which is usually the case, she will order more expensive meals and anywhere from 1 to 4 drinks on some occasions. She has NEVER ordered a drink when she intended to pick up the tab.

I have seen this happen time and time again. Not just with this girl but with many others over the years.

I am a female (25yrs) and I don't mind paying for myself at all. Actually I always insist on paying half, and I don't say it to be polite, I really mean it. I don't need for a guy to buy me stuff and pay for me, I work, and I am perfectly capable paying on my own. Ideally I would pay half of the time, and the guy the other half. It should be 50/50

I would never let a guy pay for me all the time. They are going to think they get sex or something or that they should "get some" just because they paid, or that I would have to be extra nice to them just before they paid. I am not a gold digger, I can provide for myself just fine. I don't need a guy to buy ANYTHING for me.

My ex used to be mad at me because of this. He was embarasse because a long time ago, I insisted for paying for my own ticket at the movie theater, and he was embarrassed because I did it in front of the cashier. I don't know wtf he needs to be embarassed about. Fuck, at least I'm independent, if he wants to be with a fucken gold digger, fine whatever! This happened years ago, and he still talks about it to this day!!! I must have insulted his manhood or something, but get over it!!

Trust me, if you pay, the guy might think he's entitled to sex or something, they think they are all that just because they paid. Money is power. If I'm with a guy, it's to have a good time, I don't expect them to pay for me, I wouldn't want them too. I don't need a man to pay for anything for me, I can pay for myself.

It's SOOO old fashion it's not even funny. My last two girlfriends have made more money than me, often they picked up the WHOLE tab. It's not about being polite or doing the 'guy thing,' when you are in a relationship the money shouldn't be an issue. Whoever has it shouldn't feel bad spending it, who ever doesn't shouldn't feel bad taking it, and if you both have it you shouldn't feel bad spliting it,

What I have seen is this: When she offers to take me out, she orders a normal meal and drinks water with lemon and a diet pepsi. When she knows that I am going to pay, which is usually the case, she will order more expensive meals and anywhere from 1 to 4 drinks on some occasions. She has NEVER ordered a drink when she intended to pick up the tab. I have seen this happen time and time again. Not just with this girl but with many others over the years.

Actually I always insist on paying half, and I don't say it to be polite, I really mean it. I don't need for a guy to buy me stuff and pay for me, I work, and I am perfectly capable paying on my own. Ideally I would pay half of the time, and the guy the other half. It should be 50/50 I would never let a guy pay for me all the time. They are going to think they get sex or something or that they should "get some" just because they paid, or that I would have to be extra nice to them just before they paid. I am not a gold digger, I can provide for myself just fine. I don't need a guy to buy ANYTHING for me. My ex used to be mad at me because of this. He was embarasse because a long time ago, I insisted for paying for my own ticket at the movie theater, and he was embarrassed because I did it in front of the cashier. I don't know wtf he needs to be embarassed about. Fuck, at least I'm independent, if he wants to be with a fucken gold digger, fine whatever! This happened years ago, and he still talks about it to this day!!! I must have insulted his manhood or something, but get over it!! Trust me, if you pay, the guy might think he's entitled to sex or something, they think they are all that just because they paid. Money is power. If I'm with a guy, it's to have a good time, I don't expect them to pay for me, I wouldn't want them too. I don't need a man to pay for anything for me, I can pay for myself.
