Hendrix - greatest gutair album ever?
Hendrix made greatest guitar album of all time
Jimi Hendrix's pioneering three and a half decade-old release, Are You Experienced, has been named the greatest guitar album of all time. The 1967 release, which spawned classics such as Foxy Lady and Fire, was chosen by Music experts from Mojo magazine. The Beatles failed to make even the top 20 although the writers thought their 1966 effort Revolver, with its backward guitar snatches on Tomorrow Never Knows, deserved a place in the list of the 100 greatest guitar albums. The Rolling Stones managed only number 11 with Exile On Main Street, while The Who were runners-up with 1965's My Generation. Completing a top three of Sixties releases is a self-titled 1962 compilation by bluesman Howlin' Wolf. Mojo writer Ritchie Unterberger said: "It's impossible to cram all the innovative ways of playing an electric guitar that Hendrix pioneered on his first album into one paragraph." |

It's true, nobody before or after Jimmy has played guitar like him. When he played it was never scripted (chorus here, solo there), it just flowed seamlessly.
The fact that he never took lessons and played lefthanded on a righthanded guitar only adds to his legacy. So, while he wasn't 'technically' better than guitar wizards like Van Halen for speed and accuracy, he made better music and played better guitar. Playing guitar is so much more than running scales fast. It's as if Jimmy was part of his guitar. |

Listening to Jimi for the first time was when I decided to seriously pursue playing guitar (been playing for about 30 years now).
Jimi is my all-time fave, with SRV following a close second. Both of those guys played with true feeling....something that a lot of guitar "technicians" fail to have.

there is so much more to guitar than speed and accuracy. that's why van halen does nothing for me. his style of guitar is profeicient, but it's like masterbating. the only reason he is doing it is because he can. jimi hendrix played guitar the way it is meant to be played, from the heart. every note he let out was honest. he owned it and did with it what he liked. i appreciate an honest love of music and the ability to pour yourself into every riff you play. he was a musical genius. van halen just plays the same double taps that every hair band has used. he just does it a little faster.

Those days were strange, we were totally spoilt for music. The list of bands we had are a whos who of rock legends. It started in around 1963/4 and was over within 10 years. By 1973 the money men had moved in and were producing bands they could sell. We would go out at the weekend and see bands like The Who, Yardbirds, Kinks, Rolling Stones as if it was normal and would just carry on. Seeing the Stones Sunday |

Jimi's electric ladyland record is the best guitar album around - however, the ole Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Muddy waters also kicks ass, thats where Jimi learned his riffs anyways
