Any Surfers In Da'House?

Been thinking about taking a few surfing lessons - any tips from experienced surfers?

Right here bro and in the same backyard. I have a 7ft Tony Staples Speed Egg and just bought a 6'1" Craig from Mitch's Surf Shop in La Jolla.

My tips are work on your paddling. That is the hardest thing to learn and make sure your nose of your board is slightly up and out of the water. Also, keep your legs together when paddling and don't trip over your leash when running to the water...hehehe

Seriously though, you have to work at it and you will get frustrated, but when you learn there is nothing better then riding a wave. I would also learn on a longboard if I were you.

Good luck!

Heres a note...when your brother says go for it and you notice that you can see the sand from the top of the wave... PULL THE FUCK BACK!!! lets just say two inches of water...then...SAND.
At least it wasn't the reef, but that a different story, I could hear him laughing as I caught the wave...

ok, just thought I'd give you that tip

Good Luck!

Yeah... When you hear some one yealling "go go go..." and then gigling they are trying to get you rolled.

Standard advice about working on paddling first paddling is good. There is a lot to say for building that stamina.

An off beat piece of advice I was given was that it is not a bad thing to pearl (nose under when you take off). It is easier to trim back over time than to stall out all the time and slowly dial that down.

Other tips..

You will get hit with a board. You will probably bleed... don't worry about it.

You may throw up if you go out on a really big day.

If you are in cali... take a hot shower or hit the hot tub after surfinhg. After the cold water your blood vessels will relax. The endorphines will be flowing (read as natural high)... you will feel euphoric and light headed. One of the great feelings. That is the stoke.

If there's locals in the water - stay out.

Since you are in SD, I would go to Tourmaline in PB to learn.

Big rule to not forget. Don't cut people off. If you are going left or right and someone is behind you and have position let them go, unless they are a wave hog fuckem'.

When you get to the water, kick back and check it out for a while before going in.... if there are other people, take note of the pattern. Watch how the waves are breaking and how the sets are rolling in. Basically just watch the ocean for a while so you know what's going on before you get out there.

Start with a longboard and small waves and build up over time. Know your limitations. If you feel like a wave is too freakin big, don't take it... it probably is. You'll know when you're ready for something bigger. The first time you get worked good by a big ass wave, you're going to be spinning around wondering which way is up and what the hell you're doing out there.... don't let it set fear into you... get back out there.

Respect mother ocean or she'll kill you.

Thanks AMP - yea, I've heard learning on a longboard was the thing to do. I found a couple of companines on the net who are in my area who offer private lessons - thought I might take a few and see what kind of damage I can do to myself

It's a shame to live this close to the ocean and not take advantage of it

Doing it correctly and having the strength...

I swear, it takes a lot to paddle hard enough to even catch a wave...and believe me, its a workout and a half...

maybe I'm a pussy, but after 4-5hrs in the ocean, i got home at about 6pm, showered, went straight to bed and woke up at 8am...

I've been out to the ocean here in Carlsbad and I do see people surfing - but I haven't seen any real big waves yet...only small/medium size ones. Probably good for me to learn with

Its like jogging for the first time. You will be winded and feel like you are going nowhere. I would recommend going to Mission Bay and paddling around there, so you get a feel for being on a board. Also, when paddling keep your fingers together and use deep strokes.

Also Tamarack and Beach street is pretty fun in Carlsbad.....Small right now they are mostly west /north west facing beaches..........fall thru early spring it fires out there. Try goin up the coast a little to "old Mans" at San O'. It is a big mushy shoulder that is not very fast or steep.......Yet it will hold up for a nice ride(longboard) Very good to learn on. Just don't get to far south. You may not be ready to deal with the locals at trestles just yet : ) Have fun. Like AMP said.....watch the line up . ALWAYS respect the mother.........or she will ruin you !!
