I can't believe this guy (Justin Lin) could not think of anything original so he used a real live murder-case (which happened in my high school freshman year) and is getting away with not paying the victim's family for the rights to use it.

I'm extremely conflicted when it comes to this movie.

Being Asian-American I was refreshed to see a movie where we're not "chopping them up and chopping them down". The directing style was very MTV editing with Hong Kong camera pans and angles.

However, as the movie progressed and I realized this movie was based on people I knew... I was pretty disgusted.. I think it's despicable to use exact facts from a murder (which shocked the Asian-American community in Orange County) and try to pass it off as original work. According to the OC Register (a local newspaper) the director stated it was loosely based on the actual murder. However, the occurrences in the movie were exactly how the case went down.

But for those who don't care about this fact will undoubtedly enjoy the movie. It definitely re-opens the door for dramatic Asian films that was shut when Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Chow-Yun Fat came into town.

It just sucks that he had to sell out some of his fellow gooks to do it. Pig-Fucker!!!

I stopped watching it (I have movie ADD, because I watch so many), I heard a bunch about it, but I found it borring and the whole life story of what is to an asian american I couldn't really relate too or found uninteresting. I have a lot of born in Canada asian friends too.

If the events of the movie are based more than slightly on an actual murder case then the victim's family should have been contacted, then again maybe they were and part of the agreement was that the studio not mention the actual murder case. Personally I dont know if I would want a relative or a friend's murder publicized by a feature movie, but it may be an important story to tell in which case if some anonymity was garaunteed then maybe it would make me more open to the idea.

I mean if the movie was good it was good, the issue of family compensation is separate and although it should certainly be dealt with it really doesnt detract from the value of the film.

The director states that the movie was "loosely based" on the Stuart Tay murder. Although, the movie accurately mirrored actual events. The director's home was in the same city that the murder took place.. It's a pretty small city. The director also went on and stated that part of it was based on the Columbine murders... I dunno, I just think he's full of shit.
