I saw one of those once. It managed to back up and run to a crawl to three different level 3 core routers in a matter of a couple hours of trying to fix it.

Yikes.

This was the same type of attack that has had dalnet IRC down for months on end and it is still down, every single server. GFY cant stop it any more than dalnet could if it was a large attack. The guy turned off the attack obviously.

Good point.
E-mail is the main source of idiots getting infected with these type of trojans/virusses.
It shouldn't be too hard to block all e-mails with attached virusses.
I think the user and the provider should be held responsible somehow for these attacks.
And the ones doing the actual attack should be locked up for ever.

I can't believe you're all so ignorant, I mean, if you're not interested, go search another board you can post on, while this board is down.

He already showed us he can put it down for 5 hours. So why not for 5 days?

... could as well be mass hacked unix / win boxes. Tons of publicy available exploits and ddos tools out there, and new vulns in network daemons are discovered all the time.

A correctly launched ddos attack is very hard to stop .. IPs can be spoofed, it can me made into looking like real traffic (web traffic on port 80 for example) and so on.

Its mostly kids seeking confirmation and powertrips ...

Because the IPs will all be blocked by then anyway. It's too much trouble for him, and for what, I doubt he will get anything. And in a week from now no one will remember him anyway.

Yep I think it's hard too to block attacks like that. But XFR networks can handle that, since they get paid tons of cash anyway.. (I think)

The people who laugh are ignorant indeed. It's very easy to bring an ISP to its knees nowadays, it's not like you have to be a genious. We have had irc kids do it every other week back when I worked at a shell provider.

if it's ever happened to you.. it's pretty fucking crazy watching thousands of ip's all looking like legit traffic going to your site per second but actually attacking your site.. i don't think there is any way to actually stop it.. besides logging the ip's and sending them off to level3 and verio and so on.. and they start killing the modems 1 by 1.. that's what they ended up having to do for me.. took a few days tho

Exactly. Everyone is going on about it on how he can't do it. Glad to see I'm not the only one that realizes that he actually did do it here. Regardless if he's stopped it now or GFY stopped it. It still happened and it did cause down time.

Just thought I'd post this as a little info for those that don't seem to understand this has nothing to do with email or ISP's. The attacks are coming from what is known as a "Botnet"

http://swatit.org/bots/gallery.html

They're usually controlled through IRC, many of the bot programs are not picked up by Norton, Mcaffee or any of the other virus programs, because they are not Virii. The above URL has quite a few screenshots of various IRC channels used to control the networks. The main source of the "infections" is IRC and Kazaa. You download a small program that appears to be a crack for a game or something, it gives an error, you delete it and go on your way, and now you're an unknowing pawn being used in DDOS attacks. Each "botnet" can grow to an enormous size very quickly and do serious damage.

As someone else mentioned, DALnet was brought to it's knees for months by people using these things. They are virtually unstoppable. It's not a wise idea to keep taunting this guy, if he's real, until Lensman and the hosting companies can track him down.
