Any Americans out there know if....

...it is possible to sign a check over to someone for deposit direct into their account.

Thanks in advance for any information,

Liz

Your UK bank can accept those checks, for a pretty minimal fee...

Ah, if only they would.

We're with Abbey National and they charge £10-£15 per cheque. We've thought about opening an instant plus account with another bank but we are looking for a way to avoid the horrendous exchange rate as much as possible. It may be the only way but as I've got a dollar account already......

my friend has a bunch of money in an offshore account. He will give me a few hundred thousand dollars if I just give him my bank account # so he can put the money in my bank for a few days.

I sent him all my info but I haven't heard back yet. I hope he's ok.

Seriously. The last place to ask for advice about a bank is on an adult message board. I'm sure the bank has a toll free # that will be much, MUCH more ACCURATE.

I seriously doubt any of us know the laws and legalities and terms of your bank(s).

I would normally agree with you Redshoe but I figured it might be a pretty generic service either offered in US banks or not. And yes my bank has a toll-free number that is toll-free as long as you are in the US. Also the people I talk to when I call them are friendly but rarely knowledgeable and I end up spending upwards of 30 minutes per call for information I should be able to get for free.

I'm just trying to see whether it is something most US banks will do. I have absolutely no experience with this particular service either here in the UK nor in the US so I'm just trying to get an idea of whether it is even possible.

Most US banks will require the 2nd party to be present to deposit
3rd party checks. A simple legal affidavit and prior arrangement
with your US bank should work easily, though. Speak to a local
attorney about the paperwork and your bank to see what is
needed on their end.

Yes, I think your US bank might... It just seems an odd way to go about it. I guess that is based on the fact that my UK bank is LLoyds TSB, and they are pretty reasonable with the feed.

The easiest thing to do is to ask your *bank*, instead of asking us. Call them and ask them. They know more about their policies than we do...

As I said above, you would think so but I've called them on a number of occasions and the well meaning friendly customer service people actually have very little information on anything having to do with dual currency or overseas deposits. In the end, I actually spoke to my Dad about it - he banks with the same bank - and he reassured me that it should be fine.
