Downloading MP3s - lawsuit?

Im sure many of you have heard about how the record labels will be sueing individuals for downloading music on kazaa and other peer-peer networks.

How do you think this will turn out? Perhaps leading to the end of kazza and other peer-peer networks (hopefully)

File sharing and peer2peer networks will never disappear. Once the cat's out of the bag...there's no getting it back in.

I wouldnt worry about it all that much.. unless you got some really shitty luck..

I heard on the news they were going to start with a few hundred cases..

200 divded by millions is a pretty safe bet that you are not going to get nabbed..

One thing I have noticed lately is a flood of bogus mp3's of new re;eased songs.. I tried at LEAST 25 different times to download the correct version of a song recently.

Something like this has not heppend though, it has always been talk but never taken to action, think about if they really do start to sue a lot of people, eventually people could get the hint and stop using them..

And what is it you have at stake that you so desperately want p2p sharing made illegal?

Isn't your time worth something? I would think it would just make sense to buy the CD if you are that sure you want that song. If a band you like doesn't make enough to put out another album, you will really be out of luck on getting songs you want.

It amazes me that people who make dough from the sale of pictures, stories, and video think it is righteous to steal intellectual property when it is music.

You act is if file sharing is ALL bad..

It is now quite common for struggling atrists to be the ones to put their music out there themselves merely for the exposure.

And its quite ironic that perhaps one of the most heavily traded and bootlegged band is also one of the wealthiest. The Grateful Dead.

If you have the talent then you will succeed regardless.

I used to live in a variety of punk rock group houses. There were times I would GIVE a friend a pack of ramen noodles. There is nothing wrong with giving someone something freely, whether or not the giver has anything such as exposure to gain or whether they just want to do it.

There were times however when a certain housemate would STEAL a pack of ramen and eat it without asking, hoping not to be found out. They generally had to find a new place to live. Just because GIFTS sometimes occur does not make THEFTS okay.

Do you have any idea how many talented bands fail to succeed every year? The Grateful Dead are anomalous.

Think they'd win any of the cases? Kinda hard to prove who in the household is responsable.

If a family shares a computer, just who do you name? Because they've got to go after the specific offender.

I think if they win a couple, then they will win a lot. If it a nuclear family of mom, dad, bro, and sis, then it does not matter who downloaded the files, the parents will be responsible. If it is a collegiate group house, the person who owns the computer will be responsible. I think some people will get unfairly soaked by this, but there is legal precedent for it.

I was just reading an article the other day about the histeria that came along with the casset whenthey first came out, and the fact that it was so easy to bootleg, trade and record of the radio.
The music industrie just has to reinvent it self. p2p will not be stopped! People will just use freenet or something like that. The battle is lost

So how would you feel if someone logged into your site, downloaded all the content and then put it back up for everyone else to download?

You would sit and tell them "That's fine, can I pay your B/W charges for you?"

Theft is theft, think of it as someone stealing from you and it becomes different.

Its called the usenet. And as I do 90% exclusive content on my sites, it happens alot. Not much I can do about it.

There is nothing you can do about it either. You sure as fuck are not gonna shut usenet down.

Look, I make tons of money on Kaaza, it dead bloody easy if you use your head. Right now I'm setting up my own server, and waiting for a 4MB internet connection, only for kaaza.

It's a new technology, use it in the best way you can, don't stop progress, use it in your favor

ok, here's the deal. i don't think that stealing or illegally trading intellectual material is a good thing.

but you talk about your starving artists stealing ramen noodles. this isn't because of kazaa, this is because nobody is giving them any deals. most of the shit on kazaa is from people that have already scored record deals, thus why it's on kazaa. someone bought it, ripped it and shared it.

sometimes something like kazaa can be helpful in making a small band or artist known.. they record a few of their own tracks and release them, they get spread around, deman rises and they get a deal.

i still don't think it's good, but i also don't think that your friends couldn't buy a pack of ramen noodles because of kazaa.

I'm in a band. No we don't play arena fucking stadiums and we don't get paid shit when we tour....gas money if we're lucky, and we're happy about it. If I was on somebody else's computer and saw that they had downloaded some of our songs, this would make me ecstatic. They obviously like my band and enjoy listening to the music, and since we don't have anything on cd, whoever would have made the extra effort to transfer vinyl to mp3 would make me all the more ecstatic. If I ever caught myself saying, "...we're losing money because kids can't afford to buy our record but still want to listen..." I'd fucking shoot myself in the foot. We aim to break even.

And I know it's not the actual bands who are issuing the lawsuits, but you know most of them probably could care less.
Major labels just happen to have the best lawyers on the planet, so this could get interesting. Greedy motherfuckers, nothing more. It's a revolution that they can do nothing about.

... this guy is talking about 4 Mbit bandwith ... I´ve been playing with gnutella for almost 2 years now, you need at least 80Mbit bandwith if you do it the right way ...

... obviously the guy has not driven his p2p spam technics to the edge.

there was an internet before kazaa and spam, and even before there were graphical browsers.

It was nice back then. Not so many idiots online. It actually took a little knowhow to get online back when.

It was just you and a cold unfeeling terminal window.

Now every retard with a computer can get online. But the retards make me rich so I cant complain too much.

Wait, yes I can.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha=

I don't know if someone else asked this but:

How the fuck will the "feds" track you down to your house address? If they nab your IP... well that changes hourly in some cases, do you really think that they will show up at your house???

I'm missing something?

ok... here is my

I admit it... I download mp3's... but half... no... 98% of what I have downloaded is pure crap... people do not make good mp's or they try to be record producers and add effects to the songs....

Plus, you never get the full cd, maybe a song or three... Or the song is mislabeled saying it's Soundgarden when it's actually some other crap...

To go after the people downloading is wrong... they need to go after the people producing it and distributing it.

Personally, I think it's great.. Nothing worse than going to pay good $$$ for a cd that is pure crap... if I like what I download, I go buy the CD.. I want quality... not free music..

Same with software.. some companies do not offer a 15 day or 30 day trial... I have found some fantastic shit out there that I may have never found otherwise... I tried it, liked it and bought it... they made a sale because of it... Actually, just games... and they too hardly ever work...

I do agree that some people abuse this and not everyone is like me.. but why should I suffer because I downloaded something that someone made available. If it was not available... I could not download it...

anyway.. that was my I am ready for my beating now

As far as MP3s are concerned, i dont think thats really a huge issue to me, ill download some mp3s, ill buy some CDs. But aside from MP3s kazaa has lots of other crap on there that people can get for free, which are causing alot of others to lose money.. Think rationally, p2p is still relativly new, if it were to expand greatly, it would be horrible.. giving away shit for free that normally costs money is bad, except for cheap fags.. These lawsuits might not do shit, in fact they probebly wont do shit, but i think its a step in the right direction towards minimizing the amount of copyrighted material being given away for free, just MO

If I cant buy the cd from the artist themselves directly, 9 times out of 10 I wont buy it.

Last CD I payed money for, Kool and the Gangs Greatest Hits. Now I need to find the Gap Band greatest hits.

This will turn out like that 1990 Us Library effort to punish all the criminals who failed to return their books on time. They ended up prosecuting 10 year olds and scaring the shit out of them to retrieve some 4 digit figure.

My prediction this will work as scare tactic for a while and then downloading will resume only global population is in doubling effect so they will have fun time catching everyone until artificial intelligence is developed, then we're all fucked. Or not.
