I'm guessing its just some pale color, then dyed to be the standout cheese?

Why are many foods that Americans dyed? Take for example guava juice-- It's naturally green in other countries, but pink over here.

Too many Americans being picky about food...

Like many cheeses, the color of cheddar is often modified by the use of food colorings. Annatto, extracted from a tropical tree, is frequently used to give cheddar an orange color. The origins of this practice are clouded, but the three leading theories appear to be to allow the cheese to have a consistent color from batch to batch, to assist the purchaser in identifying the type of cheese when it is unlabeled, or to identify the cheese's region of origin. In the United States, cheddar that has not been colored is frequently labeled as "white cheddar" or "Vermont cheddar", regardless of whether it was produced in the state of Vermont.

This thread is making me hungry Try Vermont cheddar, Cabot, the best there is. I won't touch the dyed cheese any more than the processed junk.

Funny note about cheese:

We had some business acquaintances down from Canada a couple years ago. We were out eating, and I was asked what kind of cheese I wanted on a sandwich, and I replied "American."

The Candians were curious and asked, "What kind of cheese is American cheese?"

I said, "Umm..I don't know. Regular cheese. Kraft singles are considered American cheese I guess."

They just started laughing and said, "You claim that as your country's cheese!" LoL. I had never even thought about it before...kind of embarrassing.

OK...while we're on cheese subject, we went to Europe back in January. Germany...I ordered a pizza and it came, I was like, wow this is the best pizza I've ever had. Something very different about it. Took me several times to finally figure it out - they don't use mozzarella cheese, they use edam or gouda - dutch cheese. Really good.

You guys. You just made me order a pizza.

You use cheddar on a pizza? Cheddar is only good in burgers.

Here's an even sicker discovery...

guess what color steaks are?

fucking GREY!

that red is total bullshit food coloring...dead meat/flesh is grey...

naaa-sty

but I'm still hooked on a good BBQ so I just deal with the thought of eating semi-rotted flesh that has to be colored to make it look appealing

Fresh meat is red. Although a day or 2 old meat is indeed gray. Nothing wrong with that. Just add spices to rotten meat and it's good to go.
