when you can't sleep, or need to get to sleep earlier than usual for some reason... what do you do??
do you take anything?? i just took some hard liquor, not sure what it is, with 2 sleeping pills... wonder how well this'll work. |

as a Taco Bell manager of 7 years, I worked the first year from 6pm to 4 am 4 days a week for an entire year. This created one of the worst sleeping patterns I have ever had in my life. I couldn't get to bed until around 10-11 am and would sleep until 5 pm almost every day. learned about melatonin and in about 2 weeks i was back to going to bed and waking up at normal hours. |

GHB, however, does not act directly on GABA receptor sites [Chin and Kreutzer, 1992]. GHB was first synthesized about thirty years ago by Dr. H. Laborit, a French researcher interested in exploring the effects of GABA in the brain. Because little or no GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier, Laborit synthesized GHB, which substitutes a hydroxy group for an amino group (see Figure 1). This difference allows GHB to cross the blood brain barrier where some of it is metabolized into GABA [Vickers, 1969]. As it turned out, Laborit found that GHB exhibited a range of effects beyond those expected from GABA. Over the intervening years, numerous researchers have extensively studied GHB?s effects. It is has come to be used in Europe as a general anesthetic, a treatment for insomnia and narcolepsy (a daytime sleeping disorder), an aid to childbirth (increasing strength of contractions, decreasing pain, and increasing dilation of the cervix), a treatment for alcoholism and alcohol withdrawal syndrome, and for many other uses. During the 1980s, GHB was widely available over-the-counter in health-food stores, purchased largely by body-builders for its ability to stimulate growth hormone release which aids in fat reduction and muscle building. In the last few years it has been gaining popularity as a ?recreational? drug offering a pleasant, alcohol-like, hangover-free ?high? with potent prosexual effects.

GHB and Sleep
GHB has been called ?almost an ideal sleep inducing substance? [Smart Drugs II, p. 245]. Small doses produce relaxation, tranquility and drowsiness which make it extremely easy to fall asleep naturally. Higher doses increase the drowsiness effect and decrease the time it takes to fall asleep. A sufficiently large dose of GHB will induce sudden sleep within five to ten minutes [Laborit, 1964]. Many other hypnotics interfere with various stages of the sleep cycle thus preventing the body from achieving a complete and balanced session of rest and recuperation. The most remarkable facet of GHB-induced sleep is its physiological resemblance to normal sleep. For instance, GHB sleep is characterized by increased levels of carbon dioxide in the arteries, as in normal sleep [Vickers, 1969]. During normal and GHB sleep, the CNS continues to be responsive to ?noxious stimuli? (pain and other irritations), a factor which sets limits on GHB?s uses in anesthesia [Vickers, 1969]. GHB facilitates both REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, and ?slow-wave? (non-REM) sleep, the stage of sleep featuring increased release of growth hormone [Laborit, 1972]. And unlike the unconsciousness induced by other anesthetics, that triggered by GHB does not feature a systemic decrease in oxygen consumption [Laborit, 1964]. The primary disadvantage to GHB?s use as a sleep aid is it?s short-term influence ? about three hours. During GHB?s influence, sleep is deeper and more restful, but after the GHB has worn off, people have a tendency to wake up. The higher the dose, the greater is this tendency. Some have called this pattern the ?dawn effect? and have speculated that it is related to the release of stored-up dopamine. Some people minimize this effect by taking minimal doses of GHB. Others take advantage of this effect by getting a couple of hours of work done in the middle of the night. Still others choose to take a second dose of GHB to sleep for another three hours. It should be noted that not everyone can be put to sleep by GHB. We have spoken to three men who have never achieved sleep even with the doses normally used for such purposes. In addition, Takahara [1977] reported that one of the six men in the growth hormone study cited above remained conscious even though he had received two and a half grams of GHB intravenously, a dosage which rendered the rest of the participants unconscious.

Myths
Myth: GHB is the safest and most beneficial compound known to man (next to water) - actual quote from a Pro GHB page <top> GHB proponents often call GHB a "dietary supplement." GHB reports written by proponents of GHB can seem medically accurate due to medical references which they choose to include in their papers and reports ? they are already biased toward the use of GHB, therefore their reports are biased. Myth: GHB is not dangerous when used by itself OR GHB is safe when taken as directed and used responsibly <top> GHB proponents and sellers claim that it is unlikely to die or OD on GHB without another substance in the body. Although deaths have occurred from GHB used in combination with other drugs, it is false to say that GHB alone cannot kill you. ANY ABUSED SUBSTANCE CAN KILL ALONE. The facts show that GHB IS dangerous. It is unstable, just like the research about it. There are many facets of GHB that experts don't even know yet! Yes, deaths do occur due to GHB. These deaths are often not documented. One of the reasons for this is that GHB leaves the system very quickly, with no trace, and there are no modern ways to quickly test for GHB overdose. Not even every coroner's department has the testing capability. So, yes, people DO die from GHB. The DEA has begun compiling a list of deaths by State. Read the known deaths so far. These are known deaths only, and as such do not include deaths caused by GHB that go undetected. Some people take GHB regularly and don?t seem to suffer major consequences for it. It is these people that proponents point to to claim this drug is safe. "Virtually no side effects," they say. The truth is, you do not know what will happen to you while you are taking GHB. Many Internet reports and information do not mention the deaths attributed to GHB use or poisoning. In fact, they will deny that these deaths were from GHB. They downplay that GHB was found in the body or on the scene. (I am not talking about the normal amount of GHB that is produced when a person dies; this is GHB in excess of normal amounts). They will claim and do claim that it was the use of other substances that caused the deaths or overdoses. (For further information and actual cases, please do further research and/or read some comments from our Comments page. The DEA is collecting a growing list of GHB -related deaths) This site is also taking reports. As for the information on GHB on the Internet, it is mostly biased toward "safe" GHB use. Recipes for it abound. Suggestions for "safe experiences" are to be found everywhere. Unfortunately, all the valuable, medical information from reputable sources is toward the end of the search engine list. You CAN find them. Don?t be fooled by Internet GHB propaganda. Consider the source of the material. Myth: If your friend passes out on GHB, don't call the hospital - you'll save on "unnecessary" hospital bills and he or she will just wake up <top> Many people have been put on life support while on a GHB overdose. Some come out of it. Others die or live in a vegetative state. But GHB proponents say that these are not really comas. Just a deep sleep. Huh? That is the advice they told our son's friend. She wanted to call 911. But they told her NO, this had happened before, he'll sleep it off. You see, GHB suppressed his breathing until his body just "forgot" to breathe. By the time he got to the hospital, it was too late. Myth: GHB improves your health, standard of living, and mental awareness <top> Unfortunately, these proponents of GHB don?t even consider it a drug, claiming that it is a natural metabolite in the human body. Well, iron is found in the body, I don?t go out and take too many iron pills for energy. That would be dangerous, even deadly. Water is found in the body, but I don?t drink so much of it that I drown myself; And so on. Just because trace, minute amounts of GHB are found in a human body doesn?t make the substance safe to consume! Medical Claims: As far as claims about medical and health use of GHB: whether or not any substance has medical benefit, this does not make it safe to use on a personal or social basis without supervision by a physician. There are MANY substances that ARE used in hospitals and treatment centers for valid purposes, but these same substances are illegally and unsafely being made, sold and used on the street. As of this writing, the only legal use of GHB is in trial stages for the treatment of narcolepsy. Whether or not GHB has ANY medical benefit is not the issue here. People are making this stuff as if mixing ingredients for science experiments. They are whipping it up in bathtubs. They claim that "if it was legal and regulated, then there would not be a problem." Even if there were a DOUBT that a substance was dangerous or deadly, wouldn?t common sense urge you to avoid it? How much more caution is needed with a substance that is definitely linked to and is the cause of death in some people. Myth: GHB is not addictive <top> Truth: GHB is addictive, and withdrawals are LIFE THREATENING! Please read this comment from Trinka Porrata, Retired Police Officer and Drug Consultant: "As I continue my extensive research on GHB, the news only gets worse. For so long the info was that this isn't an addictive drug and no big deal. Now it is readily apparent that it is highly addictive and, worse yet, getting off of it is tougher than many other drugs. Addicts stand by---you are looking at two weeks in intensive care to shake it. Going into a regular drug withdrawal program without a doctor specifically experienced in GHB is dangerous. I recently interviewed a man who takes 20-30 capfuls per day just to MAINTAIN. He gets no buzz from that dosage. But anything less sends him into the violent shakes and horrible withdrawal pains associated with this drug." Myth: Anti-GHB information is the result of the overreaction of people <top> There are reports and information PRO GHB, and CON GHB. You've probably waded through them on your way here! There will always be two sides or more of an issue presented. That is not new. You cannot base your conclusions on one person?s opinion on GHB, or their book, even if he/she uses SOME facts, which are clouded toward their own views. Do your own research. Talk to officials, hospital personnel, poison control centers. Sure, our site started out because our son died. But our efforts are toward the education of people that there IS indeed a deadly side to GHB.

How is it used?
Since about 1990, GHB has been abused by gay men in the U.S. for one of two reasons: either for its euphoric and sedative qualities in a party environment, or for its reputed anabolic or body building effects. GHB takes effect 10 to 20 minutes after you swallow that first swig and lasts up to 4 hours, depending on the dose. GHB is still trafficked in gyms and on the steroid black market for its reputed ability to stimulate release of human growth hormone and the resultant fat reduction and muscle growth.
