Lack of funding to black high schools has nothing to do with those kids dropping out in such high numbers. If a huge percentage of kids at mostly black highschools are dropping out, then that tells me the vast majority of these kids don't give a damn about their future (or they just don't know any better). So that accounts for the lack of black's in college.

It's as if these 15 & 16yo kids don't see the need for education. They look around and see nothing but total failure in their family and neighborhoods, and start to believe the only legal way out is to get into the NBA or make a rap record.

I don't think the average black low-income family child realizes all he has to do is get really good grades in high school, which qualifies him for a major college, and then several years later he's living in a suburban middle class neighborhood. Not the ghetto where his family and friends are still at.

The solution isn't just letting them into college "just because". It's getting to them early in their high school career, and drilling it into their heads that they need to stay there and work hard.

Maybe in the end this will work out though. It may be 20 years from now, but it can only be a good thing if black kids see more and more members of their race making something of themselves. It sets a good example. An example they just don't have right now.

While I understand the reason we have it, and don't necessarily agree with it in all circumstances what I do not understand is why they LOWER the qualifications.

Shit give the job to a black man, just make sure he meets the SAME qualifications.

I'm sure there are many qualified, educated black men who can do the job 10x's better than someone who gets to slide by on the exam.

Now of course for you of the vagina persuasion, you can change out the word (s) man/men for woman/women ;)

If you take a less qualified black man just because he happened to apply for the job, instead of waiting out to find a qualified black man and the less qualified black man fails it only proves the concept is a failure.

It only reinforces the negative perception that a lot of people have about affirmative action.

Not necessarily true. If it were a perfect world then yes, but it isn't and all men are not equal.

Now my reply to someone who posted about middle class white schools being a haven for education. sorry but give me a fuckin' break.

Now while it is true that in areas where the student population is largely minority that school funding is lacking, the simple fact is we live in a society that discriminates against classes as well.

You'll find the same trouble in outlying rural areas as you do in inner city areas.

You'll also find that teachers will direct their attention and efforts towards children in their classes that fit a certain profile.

Children who come from a wealthier family, attractive children, children who are perceived to be more "well behaved," etc will get more attention.

Not only have I seen it with my own eyes through my public school career, but I have seen it when my brother who is 7 years younger went through school, and now as my nieces wind their way through the system.

Schools are all about peer pressure. Teachers and administrators even condone it, if it's applied towards a certain group of people.

In my school the classes broke down into these 3 major categories.

The preps, the goatropers *cowboys*, the heads.

I've seen preps harass the pot heads without any fear of retribution in class in front of teachers. Only when they reacted did the teachers attempt to control it.

Same goes with coaches, they would make fun of guys with long hair wearing raggy jeans and concert t-shirts and all the jocks in class would chime in.

It was like watching behind the scenes of the highschool in the breakfast club.

These teachers could care less about these kids, whether they fail or not is not their problem.

In fact they'd just rather pass them so they don't have to deal with them again.

But they sure as hell spent plenty of time with the preps.

I live in Las Vegas. A state that pulls in billions a year on tourism to the casinos but yet they can't get a budget worked up for the school system.

In fact they are trying to cut out the arts *you know damn well they won't touch the cool kids sports programs* they are even considering going to a 4 day school week because of a lack of teachers.

This place sucks goat mans ass.

Thats why they invented the 3-point line.

The problem with affirmative action is that it is a treatment for the symptom, and not the problem. The problem is maybe racism, maybe certain attitudes to education, this does squat to affect that except make a few overlooked honkies dislike the black people who took their place. Planting the seeds of future racism ?

I remember a similar situation in the UK way back. Only with woman. A lot of politicians and do-gooders wanted affirmative action for woman in the UK. Minimum of one female director in large companies etc. More woman in the top jobs. Loada wankers (mostly men it has to be said) whinging about how woman were overlooked and couldn't get to the top jobs even if they were qualified. About three months after all this blew up, Margeret Thatcher got elected to the most powerful position in the UK as Prime Minister and all these affirmative action morons crawled back under the stones where they came from.

If George Washington and Thomas jefferson pissed on every black man's head I don't owe for that. This "we are owed" crap is really getting old. If minorties feel they are owed then send a bill and then hold there breath while they wait for payment.

Hey! I'm white and I can dunk. On other topic... I think the WNBA should have taken the offer of the 9' basket. Chicks dunking on chicks... I'd actually watch the WNBA then. It's no insult either, just the truth that 99.999...% of girls can't dunk on 10' hoops. Only one cheesy fastbreak dunk in the WNBA so far by a 6'5" woman, and they stopped the whole fucking game to celebrate.

That's sensible, if you add in a few more factors.

In the UK there's been debate on making top universities set aside a quota for students from state run schools who have gotten too low grades to get in on the merits of their grades alone, but who have performed very well compared to the rest of the students at their respective schools.

The idea is that the student population in schools should mostly be as intelligent and capable, so if you get all A's in a top private school with 6-8 students per class and an average of over 80-90% A's you aren't necessarily a better student than someone who averaged B from a school where few people get A's at all and a significant portion end up with C's.

In the UK, if put in place, this WOULD in effect more blacks would get in to top universities. Not because they are inferior in any way, but because the black population on average face higher unemployment, earn less and are more likely to be poor, and thus are much less likely to afford to live in places with got good, well funded state run schools or send their kids to private schools.

But at the same time, it would give the same preferential treatment to children from poor white families.

No, it's not for minorities, it's for blacks, native americans, hispanics only.

- talented black people are being filtered out of their own communities
- it is easier for corporate/political america to steal the life savings of working class and middle class white and black people who are preoccupied with some bullshit debate

maybe, especially us blacks, we should stop debating this garbage issue and get to stackin' chips in this "dusty desert of dollars and smartness"
