:stoned Who here will admit to reading Harry Potter?

I have and they are good! Anyone else in this pit of fragile egos and way too much testosterone going to admit to it?

I have read and own all four. I am sure I will buy the fifth once the fervor dies down.

As a kid I never read 700+ page books. It is amazing that kids today with PS2, Xbox, etc are still willing to read long books. The author sure is doing something right.

not in a million years would i read that crap..... .

it's a weak melange of every fantasy stereotype in the genre and certainly doesn't measure up in any way to the classics of JRR Tolkien and the like.

I own the first book but don't have time to read it, however I've seen the movies and they absoutely ROCK.

And yes, I'm also a Tolkien fan. Try getting a 6-yr old to read Tolkien, brainiac... the Potter books have opened up a world of mystery and fantasy to kids of *all* ages, not just the ones old enough to comprehend the big words.

Read a few pages in the bookstore. Didn't seem very good. I saw the first movie. Didn't see the second. That best explains what I thought.

For those that like them, why? What is the appeal? What do you identify with? What do you take from it? (especially you Sykkboy)

I've read all 4 and will be at the store at midnight tomorrow picking up a copy.

My son read the first book 3 years ago when he was 6. That was his first big book. He has read each one at least twice now and is eagerly awaiting the new book. I'm going to let him read it first since I leave for Phoenix for a week on Sunday. I have no doubt that when I get back he will be done with it.

The Harry Potter books were the first big series that he read. Since then he has read everything from Tolkien's books to War of the Worlds, Lord of the Flies, Tom Sawyer, Call of the Wild, and a ton of other classics. Got straight A's in school this year and hopefully will keep it up as he grows older. I'm sure he would have been reading even if there was no Harry Potter, but giving kids something they can relate to (kids their age having magic powers) helps fuel the desire to read more. My kid grew up in a comic store (no, we didn't drop him off there to be raised, I owned it) so he started out reading Dr. Suess, Batman, and Spider-man. I'm sure he will be warped from it somehow when he is older.

I actually enjoyed the books more than the movies. The movies have decent special effects and acting but the version I see in my mind is always better

Hairy Potter....

yeah i think he did a shoot for us once.

j/k

the wife and I are expecting our first kid in onv, and we will be using the pretence of reading to the unborn beauty, as reason to buy the latest offereing.

read all the other 4.

i have friends who have been re-reading the last books to prep themselves for the new release. I think that is sad.

anyway, doesnt the book come out on saturday?

I have read the previous four Harry Potter books. My friend and his wife have also read them. I have heard that a main character is to bite the dust in the new book.

I have read them all and could be getting my reserved copy sent to me on Sat.

If you are just watching the movies you are seriously missing out. And for those who think it is too long. Remember these books are written for 10 to 15 year olds. They are in bigger print and spaced wider. So 870 pages is about 500 for a regular novel.

They are worth the time to pick up and read that is for sure.

I saw the first movie on dvd. Haven't seen the second one. No way would I take the time to read the book. Seems like a rip off of several other BETTER fantasy stories I have read, most notably Neil Gaiman's Books of Magic graphic novel that he did before Sandman and which may be made into a movie soon.

While it's true JK Rowlings does borrow from a lot of other fantasy books, I like the way the books are written.
The colorful language Rowlings gives and the fact these aren't typical kids books in the See Spot Run vein, these are books that are a fun read.

To me the appeal of the charcaters are how they are "typical" kids who just happen to be studying magic. The books take me back to my youth when the world seemed magical. Hogwarts is a palce you can escape to. There are familiar characters (so many of the charcaters have traits of people you know) and they all have their strengths and faults. While Harry is the "hero" of the books, he as clueless about most of his powers and magic as we are and we begin and stay on that journey of discovery with him.

Just becase kids are reading the books, it doesn't mean these are "children's" books...my 8 year old son has discovered and begun reading Tom Sawyer books....doesn't make them kids book.

They are great fantasy and great fiction, even if not 100% orginal.

I'm not a child to read such tales. However even my 8 y.o. son don't like this book/movie since he considers it too boring and stupid for him... There are lots of more interesting books around.

P.S. I thought this board is intended for adult web masters who are 18+. Am I wrong?

Why don't you discuss here The Lord of the Rings or something like that? Do you really think that Harry Potter is a better thing for 18+ people?

My favorites growing up were the Chronicles Of Narnia.

I read that series no less than 3 or 4 times.

Anyone that can't appreciate a good book, childrens books or adults, is really missing out on a whole new world. Some of the stuff they're coming out with these days is great, especially the movies. Christ, when I first saw the trailer for Finding Nemo at The Matrix Reloaded I laughed my ass off. Now I don't to go see the damn thing! A couple months back a friend and I rented Monsters, Inc... I felt stupid watching it but I found it pretty damn funny.

Some people need to lighten up...

It doesn't, however personally I feel envy (in a good sense) to you and your family couse I have no time to read belees-lettres. I have only the time to read Java, JavaScrip, PHP, C/C++ manuals and other shit like that

I can't admit to having read any of them; Vail read all of them to me. Since she is gone for months, I will be reading the latest one to myself when it arrives this weekend or early next week.
