Big Screen TV;s

anyone here a bit fan of electronics? TV's in particular.

i was looking into buying a new big screen TV. I was thinking projection TV between 40-53 inches. I like the sony;s but the panasonics have awesome channel surfing features(i know it sounds lame, but if you like tv you can respect this feature)

anyone have any thoughts on bigscreen TV;s?
anything particlarly relating to the panasonic or sony projection TV's?
any other recommended tv;s to check out?

I love Sony personally. Crouch on the floor in front of what you're thinking about buying and look up.. Can you see the picture at all or is it black? Sometimes people lay on the floor in front of the tv to watch.. Some TV's are just flat black instead of showing a pic from this angle. I'm buying a new Sony soon, I've got a 43" and I want something bigger.

I've got satellite so I don't get the channel surfing features anyhow.

You know, that isn't a bad suggestion. Home theater is growing up so fast, the investment is almost as moot as the computer investments we make oh so often.

I know i'm in a small town but you can rent a big screen for less than $25 a week, see if your rental place has some plasma shit.

I wasn't impressed with what they had to offer pre-HDTV, now I must say they've really stepped up to the plate.

Not that small I guess. but since i just moved out of dallas a few months ago this town of 25,000 is real small to me.

Come to think of it honestly the only time I care about having a big tv is during the football season, since most of the time I'm at my desk watching the tv on it while I work. and I don't watch many movies ever. I've been known to go and rent whatever the latest big screen is from the rental place just for the few months of the football season and then give it back to them.

My parents have a Panasonic and it's awesome, but I've heard that reliability is so-so on certain models.

My Toshiba (only 27") has a decent image, but most of all it's reliable. That thing is built to last 20 years.

i think ill have to put mine in front of my fireplace, whoever designed this condo was a real certified FUCKWIT!

after the couches and the sliding glass door, only wall left in that room is the one thats split of so perfectly by a fireplace, with just short of enough room on each side for a decent sized TV.

im kind of pissed off about this.... a plasma would go good above the fireplace, but i aint got 5 grand for a fuckign TV.

and good point about the satellite, i think my digital cable will fuck with my channel surfing too..... now im fucking pissed.

Hi,

I love big screens, couldn't live without them

in my first living room I have a Toshiba 60 inch with surround sound and dvd, etc. It's not hdtv, but I will get one within a yr or so.

in my 2nd lv. room I have a 61 Sony, I love the sony. Pic in pic, great resolution, etc.

Both are hooked up to hughes dtv.

I have looked at the 50 inch flat screen plasma wall tv. It sure is nice, and looks great via hdtv. They had a great demo at Costco..

get your self a mitsubishi 65" you can pick one of them up for under 3000. great color. if you want really big get a sharp front projection.

oh and they missubishi has a few lines. get a platinum. if your gonna go top of the line the diamond you might as well go with front projection not rear.

rear projection has really improved over the last few years

yea, i dont want to go to 60.

the mitsubishi's are nice! but i also heard something about thier video game problems.

with a progrssive scan dvd do you need to use s-vidoe cables as well? does digital cable look better on them then regular cable? my old roomate had a BSTV and it had really bad grain to it... you could see horizontal lines in it. was that the cable or the TV itself?

What size do you want to buy?

If 65" then the Diamondscan kicks ass...

If smaller get the 47" panny

Checkout

http://www.panny.tv/

There are lots of tweaks you can do to improve the picture, some require a hd input to tune.

Forgot to add...

Do you plan to watch dvd/hd stuff or plan to watch tv shit.

Cause that determines if you want a Full/Wide tv.

Plus you'll want a AutoScaling Progressive scan dvd player. (to remove black bars at top and bottom)

I got a DLP projector and a 100 inch screen

But you need about 12 to 14 feet from the projector to the screen
It will go to 200 inches but I dont have a room big enough for that

Probably a TV Noob question, but how does a widescreen TV display television channels properly. Does it put black letterboxes to the left and right of the image to bring the screen size back to TV broadcast dimensions? Always wondered about that...

Amazon.com has a kick ass deal on a 65" HDTV Widescreen. It is here http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...onics&n=507846

I don't know how good the TV is but the people who have one seem to be happy and for that price you can't go wrong.

NEVER RENT anything, those places are total scams. I know that there's a Rent All place in town here and they put their flyers out all the time. I always get a kick outta reading the fine print, by the time you pay for the thing, you're paying like 4 times the actual value of the thing.

I know that someone said to rent, then just pick up something else when it comes out, but in that case, if you're paying say $25 PER WEEK (for an expensive item like that, it'd probably be a little more), you'd be paying $100 per month, if you kept it for a year, that'd be $1200, so you'd end up changing it out for something else and pay another $1200 the next year, then another and another. I suppose that it'd be a good way to test out an item though before you buy it, take it for a month or two, then run out and buy it

I just have a 21 inch TV. Plain old Zenith in the living room.

Have digital cable, DVD, VCR and Sony CD deck and amps into it for the DVD player.

Just a nice basic set up.

Only use it to watch the news at night and the rare tv show. The real show is on the puter screens.

I used to be a diehard Sony fan. But I really think Panasonic picture quality is superior. Also the high end series from Mitsubishi is excellent.

I have a Mitsubishi 65" that I got for 3grand like 4 months ago. I play PS2 on it but not all the time. As long as you aren't playing the same game that has graphics that never move you will be ok. Same with your tv channels also, don't leave it on a certain channel 24X7 if they have some graphic that does not fucking move or it will burn in. Most channels have everything moving now that I have seen though.

Gotta bump your thread... going thru this right now. Just bought my first house and I'm in the same situation. I went to bestbuy and I can't decide between the Sony or Mitsu... the Mitsu pic was better inside but the guy said it was because of the way that had the tv's hooked up... I was seriously interested in Sony cause of the name but now not sure

huh ? care to explain why ? or just because you got Toshiba ?

when i was shopping around for a TV i compared sony and toshiba projection screens in several stores. The toshiba's had a MUCH clearer picture than the sony's on widescreen HDTV projection TVs every time i compared units at all size levels- AND they were a little cheaper too (not that price was a concern)

Interesting thread -

We are moving into our new house in 2 weeks. Finally I have a dedicated gameroom for my pool table and I want to have a nice sized TV in there for the Xbox/PS2.

Whats the deal with playing games on these bigger TVs? Does it screw up the screen? I did read a little about the plasmas, but does this apply to all bigger TVs?

I have a 53" Hitachi, I looked at the others and the Toshiba is a great model, but I got a better deal on the one I have, and quite happy with it.

Why purchase a projection tv in that size when you can have a plasma tv. I have a pioneer elite projection myself but next tv will be plasma.
