I looked at a couple in South Africa, but since I've found a non-benzophobic doc I don't need 'em yet.

I think panic disorders are one area where people need to be cautious of most doctor's. I've known a couple of Doc's who specialize in treating PD pharmacologically, and they've said the same. They're constantly hearing horror stories from patients who've been under or over medicated for PD by general practitioners. I know one woman who was put on anti-psychotics for anxiety.. like driving a tack with a sledgehammer.

I almost consider myself European here. Americans see "homeopathic" and they gp nuts. Witch doctor, etc.

I'm 31 and avoid doctors like the plague. Who wouldn't. 'Three times I've gone. Every time I've gotten advice that was wrong, pure and simple.

Condemn it if you will, good American, everytime I've gone homeopathic, it's woked. Nothing mysticsl about it, it is tried and true methods, thousands of years olf.

i started getting panic attacks early this year. fucking nasty, and i had no idea what was going on. feels like you're having a heart attack - heart beating like mad, palpitations, dizziness, etc.

i got checked out by a doctor, and he prescribed xanax to me. i still haven't filled the perscription - decided to tough it out and see if things might get better. i've heard some bad things about xanax.

more exercise, more sleep, taking more time out for reading/snowboarding/traveling and other things i enjoy (rather than just work only). the attacks have lessened over the past couple of months... so things seem to have gotten a little better.

I started mine from one day at school just having lunch and it hit me, my heart racing like a motherfucker, i feel like i need to lay down to relax, but at the same time do something fast, i cant breath very well and i feel like im going to die. I was rushed to the hosiptial and sent home 2 hours later to find out that nothing was wrong with me, I tell my mom its fucking bullshit I felt like i was going to die, i was so scared from that day on, couldnt sleep, eat, move just felt like it was going to happen again anytime.

I than went for many other tests to keep finding out nothing was wrong with me and kept going along with life, thinking about killing myself many times and came pretty close to it. how stupid that sounds life was pretty fucking hard dealing with something such as this. somehow i managed to find out what it was i had from my father yelling at me telling to to smarten the fuck up its all in my head, sure it was and i had to deal with it.

I did learn that caffine did not help me in anyway what soever, when i drink pop i get a shaky feeling inside me, and got a feeling like i need to breath more air and i keep taking deep breath.

it been about 8 years now, and I seem to be handling it pretty good, the computer seems to comfort me and keep my mind off of it, and keeping busy really helps, when i do have attacks thou, I comfort myself, wrap up in a blanket and think of happy things, many times i would sit outside on my deck and stare at the stars, just to clear my mind and let this shit get over with.

if you have a panic attack, thinking about it will make it alot worth and make you think more about it etc etc. its almost like a fight with your body that you have to win. this is definatly a hard thing to beat casues no matter how tough you are this is one scary cock sucking thing and really sucks large. to this day i think i handle them very well, but yet i still get them and its fucking annoying. I find talking about it helps alot causes you get to explain what you are going through and at the same time your teaching yourself what is going on and what you need to do.

im not too sure about them books, ive read many of them, one technique was to tence your feet and let go tence your legs and let go while laying in bed so you could go into like a relax stage, do you know how hard it is to do that shit when you are having an attack? guess different things work for different ppl.

i nevered tried them pills, thou i had them lots of them, and almost took them all one day. glad i didnt.

Homeopathy is less than 200 years old. Its not popular because its never survived the gold standard for testing modern medications.. the double blind study.

It came about in the late 1700's when some german doctor, tired of using leeches and bloodletting to treat people, came up with the incredibly bright idea that a substance which cause physical problems in large amounts will cure the same problems when administered in infintesimal amounts.

Brilliant, huh?

It should be obvious to anyone who's taken highschool biology that diluting any substance to the degree that homeopathic "medicines" are diluted (20x - 30x) renders it impotent. Even the most potent toxins have no effect on the human body when diluted that far down.

There is a law in chemistry which states that there is a limit to the dilution that can be made before you lose the original substance entirely. Again.. high school biology.. if you dilute something to even 12x, there is virtually no chance that any of the substance you were diluting remains in any one dose of the "medicine."

Of course the laws of chemistry don't apply to homeopathy, do they?

Hahneman(sp?).. the german doc who came up with this crap.. realized this, but he believed that the vigorous shaking or pulverizing with each step of dilution leaves behind a "spirit-like" essence which cures by reviving the body's "vital force." Modern homeopaths assert that even when the last molecule is gone, a "memory" of the substance is retained.

So yeah, it is witch doctor, mystical bullshit which ignores basic physical laws.

Xanax is alright. You can become dependent if you take more than 4mg/day on a regular basis, but thats not going to happen if you take it on an as needed basis for individual attacks.

.25 - .5mg is all it takes to stop a PA for me.. and I only use the stuff once or twice a week when I get a real bad one.

The nice thing is its nearly impossible to take too much. You have to take almost 900x the maximum dosage of 10mg to hurt yourself, which is why it was once considered safe.

Better to control it without drugs tho.

Anyway, if you have doubts about xanax, just read the prescribing information. It'll tell you more than you ever wanted to know about it, but its reassuring to know exactly whats going on when you take it.

AL=lso on the xanax/benzo subject, I joined a mailing list for anxiety/panic sufferes for a while, and there were several people on it who'd been taking high doses (5-10mg daily) of Xanax for 5-15 years to control debilitating panic attacks.

They are dependent on it in the sense that if you took them off suddenly there would be xanax withdrawal syndrome, but other than that they live normal lives, have families, hold down jobs etc. The only effect they reported is a short term memory deficit not unlike the one you get when you smoke weed regularly.

I wouldn't presume to advise people on what drugs they should be taking, but I do know that alot of the bad stuff about xanax is media created nonsense that started when 60 minutes did a "special" on it.

That's a common misconception about pills in general. You would need to swallow (and not throw up) about 800 valiums (10mg) to even have a chance of dying. The only ones that can REALLY kill you are Tuinal and Darvon (NOT Darvon-N or Darvocet). The only Benzo that could do it is Rohypnol, but even then the odds aren't on your side.

Interesting story though. It's amazing that such problems are still misunderstood in a world that considers itself enlightened.

Xanax acts rapidly, but it only makes you calm/euphoric for a short period of time. It's great when you have an appointment in the morning and you don't want to spend hours tossing and turning in bed. It can knock you right out and the next day you'll be fine. Valium is a little slower to act, but it'll keep you calm for a very long time. Sometimes I take 40 mg at 10:00 PM, and the next morning I'll be stumbling around, mumbling nonsense to myself while trying to take a shower and prepare breakfast. The valium "high" lasts as long as 12-16 hours for me.

The key with all benzos is to take them only when you need them. Building up tolerance is no fun, and it's easy to get addicted.

It should also probably be noted that while its nearly impossible to OD on anti-anxiety benzo's by themselves, all bets are off if you combine them with alcohol or other CNS depressants.

I get panic attacks in public every once in a while for no reason. I just get the shakes and fill a little sick to my stomach. Feels like I'm weak from skipping a few meals or something.

pretty much everything you stated above. i had a friend who was on xanax for years, and it really 'slowed' her down. i'm not sure of the doses, but it really changed her. she's off it now, but had a bitch of time *getting* off it.

anyway, things have gotten better by changing my lifestyle. of course if things get worse again, i'll have to re-evaluate...

on a related topic, does anyone have anxiety-induced heart palpitations? i'm not talking about pa's, just the odd pvc? this was something i started experiencing around the same time, but they have also subsided (still get the odd one).

Fuck yeah.. for many panic sufferers, heart attack fear related to palpitations are the main symptom. Its called anticipatory anxiety.. you get worried about your heart and start becoming very conscious of it.. on edge all the time even.. then when a palpitation or a PVC or two does happen, you go into panic mode.

Alcohol, caffeine and anxiety are good at causing PVC's.

Like fletch says:

1. stop drinking caffeiine.

2. gave up cigarettes.

3. quit eating sugar.

4. and stop drinking every damn day. (even AFTER AA)

that will help anyone with any condition.

also, try to exercise in the morning AND afternoon.

If things don't change, then you're not following the steps.

I have had these, esp when things get bad business wise as they did about 6-7 years ago. scarry cause there's heart disease in my family. been throught the full coleresterol testing and I was borderline, that was a couple of years ago - I'm going for it all again in a couple of weeks. I hope it's better, i doubt it though....

less stress, exercise, and eating right help. well at least I did one out of three............i'm working on the other two (or at least thinking about workin on them)

i will give this business one thing, for me it's had a LOT less stress than anything else I've ever done. What could be better than working in porn and getting paid piles of money to do it? I get to stay at home all day, play with my dog, go to porn conventions, and meet really incredible people, many of which have had unbelieveably interesting lives. I love my job.
