Why are Affiliate Programs called "sponsors" ?

It's more like an Affiliate Program or Partnership Program. But most people call it sponsor. Isn't it wrong ?

Sponsor:

1. One who assumes responsibility for another person or a group during a period of instruction, apprenticeship, or probation.
2. One who vouches for the suitability of a candidate for admission.
3. One that finances a project or an event carried out by another person or group
In my own words - one who gives money basicaly for free (maybe in exchange for promotion of his name/trademark).

in the early days, affiliate programs financed websites. In those days, websites had an intellectual value and the $$$ was a secondary consideration. The "sponsor" helped offset the webmasters costs so the webmaster could do what he did. (which was not create 1000s of tgp galleries)

Sponsor. You know, like a TV sponsor. Someone who gets their name and product plastered all over a show. Paying for advertising. What's so complicated?

Definitions of words are arbitrary anyway, and change with the times.
