If you reinstall your OS, all your data will be lost.

You're basically fucked.

How about pulling out my old hard drive and wanging it in one of my other PC's and then just taking the important stuff over 1 by 1?

I know it could fuck my other PC but if I wait a day or two, Norton should have antidoted the virus... Erm... Maybe?

What the...?

You can't do that, if you're PC doesn't boot up, it's probably because of your HD being infected. You can try taking it to a HD backup specialist, and they will perform special procedures to extract the data.

It's usually possible to re-install the OS without re-formating the HD ... Win XP (and I think NT/2000 as well) also has a repairoption that works too. Boot from your CD and try it.

If your hard drive won't boot it won't matter if you hook it up to another computer or not, you still won't be able to access the data.

Not necessarily, I have installed XP Pro several times using the upgrade option.... All data still in tact.

However, if you have a virus, that may not get rid of the infection. If you cannot boot up then you cannot run a virus fix... basically, I hate to say this, format C may be your only hope. Unless you can get in with a dos boot and try running some anti virus program that way.

Been there... done that... I know what you are going through and I know how much it sucks. I feel for ya.

Back up, back up back up..... daily!

buy a new hd, install xp on it and a good antivirus software like norton..

install your old hd as a slave but dont boot up into windows.. boot into dos and try running a virus scan on your old drive from there

this is just a theory, should work
