Yes...I had a living will made when I turned forty...and your are right. By the way a living will saves a lot of hassles for those that may be in your will.

I did mine a long time ago, then changed it, then changed it and again changed it.

Things in my life keep changing. Now Everything is in both our names so maybe I won't have to change it again.

if you have loved ones dependant on your income life insurance isn't a bad idea either. even with a will and a ton of assets they can be frozen in probate for long periods of time - life insurance pays out quite quicky and gives them some cash - tax free too - to help when they need it the most.

That is the purpose of a "living will"...no probate court...no attorneys involved. Clean...simple...hassle free.

Doesn't it depend on how much you have and whether it's likely to be contested?

Not with a "living will"...but you may not know what a "living will" is...but then again it may be that one cannot have a "living will" in Canada.

actually a living will in canada is basically a document telling a doctor to pull the plug.

I assumed it meant something different to a speedbump as you were talking about assets

I am from the USA so I can only speak about the USA...but a "living will" in the USA does not go through probate court and there are not any attorneys involved after the person dies...this is because named assets in the will are "virtually transferred" to the inhieritor prior to death through the "power of attorney". In the USA their are two types of "power of attorney" one is limited in power and the other is not. Bottom line...when the person dies...you use the power of attorney to sell assets...or transfer funds...or sell stock etc. etc. It is not contestable by anyone as you and you alone already own all assets via the power of attorney.

Maybe you are aware if this exists in Canada?

Exactly.

MY living will says that if something happens and I'm in certain situations that my next of kin will not be making the decision as to whether I live or die, I've done that ahead of time.

It is everday common to have a "living will" drawn up and is 100% legit...that makes you rank among the dumbest not to be aware of it. It is simply signing over your assets prior to death via the power of attorney. Simple...clean...and hassle proof.

As long as you don't have anything complicated to allocate to your beneficiaries... you can buy a package from Office Depot for a few bucks and whip out a legally binding will.

You cant retire, you can just go for long vacations. You wont have savings enought to live forever.

i wonder if you could runa paysite where membership is free but entrance is subject to signing a piece of paper that turns over 10% of the gross value of your entire estate upon death to the paysite owner....

You wouldn't need too many people to die before you had a lot of money........

But you should need to filter the age, like just 60+ year old people can join... or you you could get fucked in bandwidth bills if a good % of them were under 30
