dipshit. I'm not the toughest guy in the world, but I train at Gracie Academy. Our instructor started the UFC, and if you had been paying any attention, you would have seen every single martial art except the three I mentioned totally discredited in the ring.

Actually, you are the dipshit. You said all martial arts except those three are useless. Well, a surprise for ya: most fights aren't UFC fights.

Saying things are useless because of one form of competition is stupid. The average karateka will beat the crap out of the average untrained fighter with ease, for instance. All martial arts are useful, some just more so than others.

And the three you named... well, if you have watched UFC, you should know some folks in there have done rather well with other styles, even things like greco-roman wrestling. And how about things such as krav maga?

Thinking in terms of styles used in competitions when it comes to fighting is pretty stupid, period.

Ah, gee. The little fag has to resort to using the big fag as backup. How sweet.

In case you hadn't noticed, I merely pointed out his unhealthy obsession with joe6pack. If you consider that obsession normal behaviour, it says more about you than about me.

And besides, what the fuck does that thread have to do with anything? You talk bullshit about fighting, like some little scrawny kid who just joined a gym for the first time and now thinks he's bruce lee, and that's what this is about, bitch.

wrestling is a good base to start from, but nobody wins with wrestling, they add JJ to their game and become submission fighters.

I've never heard of a Krav Maga guy doing anything with it. As far as Karatekas doing ok in streetfighting, that's imho just because they're in shape. I have NEVER seen a TKD, Kempo, Kung Fu etc guy keep his form in a real fight, they're forced to become brawlers every time. No technique, just wild swinging and shitty grappling.

Regarding the difference between competition submission fighting and streetfighting, there isn't as much as you would think except for the mat. When the UFC started there was ball-punching, elbows to the head, you name it and it was legal. Rorion still believes it should be that way.

Yes, you can win with just wrestling - in streetfights that is. The world doesn't revolve around the ring (or octagon, if you prefer).

What you just said about not having heard of krav maga guys doing anything with it clearly shows what I mean. No, you won't find people using it in the ring (at least not in it's real form), things like eye gouging and biting are most often not well-liked in the ring. However, the Israeli army has done quite a bit with it - and that's real fights, mind you.

A karateka will not just beat a random guy because he is in shape, but also because he knows how to punch effectively. Not as effectively as in some other sports, but more effectively than most random people would do, even when they're in good shape.

UFC never was quite like streetfights, not even with the rules they had before. In UFC, the fight gets stopped because of a broken nose... in the real world, the fight might not get stopped at all. In UFC, it's one on one... in the real world, it may be 10 on 1 (in which case, the hundred meter dash would probably be the best martial art).

If I were to train for MMA competition, I would probably go for training in BJJ, Muay Thai and Boxing, yes. That doesn't mean that all other martial arts are useless, it just means those three are more useful. Like I said, all of them are useful in fights, some just more than others.

So far, it seems to me that the only thing that has been proven here is that you are an idiot who mistakes the ring for the real world.

so basically you're saying that these martial arts are only good because they teach you to throw a straight punch, which you should have learned at age 10 from your father. That's not good enough, in my opinion, especially as they present themselves as an art to protect yourself on the street and they take your money while they do it. It's dangerous to have a false sense of security.

I've been training at Gracie Academy under Rener Gracie for 11 months in GJJ. Where and what do you study?

No, what I'm basically saying is that every martial art gives you a number of techniques which are usable in real combat. Nothing is good enough though, because even Tim Sylvia or Royce Gracie will die with a bullet in his head. The sense of security BJJ gives is just as false as the one Pencak Silat gives.

I've spent a large part of my life training at small, insignificant gyms and dojo's in karate, judo, a bit of jiu jitsu and some kickboxing. More importantly, though, I've been in quite a number of streetfights, and have worked as a bouncer at two bars.

you just haven't learned the secret Gracie Anti-Bullet techniques ;)

You're just arguing for the sake of arguing. You know as well as anyone that most people aren't going to shoot you on the street, it's gonna be a fight and it's usually going to go to the ground.

Being an experienced fighter, bouncer etc is great and will get you by most people, but it's no substitute for a keylock or a hard armbar.

Shot at... not hit.

Back in 94 I was a firefighter here. Some guy got run over on a motercycle by the cops and a riot ensued. Well shit got set on fire and of course we went to put it out no knowing theses silly bastards wanted to take shots at us. Only thing hit was my fire truck. A foot higher and to the right and it would have been me.

Those I would be interested in learning about

But in all seriousness, I am convinced that BJJ is in fact the most effective fighting style there is, especially when combined with muay thai. However, saying that all others are useless goes too far in my experience.

maybe useless is too strong a word.. I definitely think your time is much MUCH better spent learning one of the main three arts that have proved themselves in the ring though

Well, what might be even more useful is just being a big strong bulky guy. That tends to get a lot of fights out of your way

there's really not much you can do about it when more than a couple come at you all at once, just try to create enough room to make a break for it.

hong kong movies notwithstanding

Everyone has kissed and made up.

Isn't that sweet. Krav Maga is a McDojo. Nothing like learning how to disarm by punching a guy in the face.

SCARS on the other hand...

Huh???

Coleman, Couture, Ortiz, Frye, hell, even dan severn has won a few matches and none of them are submission experts.

If your talking ufc, wrestling is the first thing you should learn otherwise you'll spend entire match's on your back and you'll notice the wrestlers mentioned above dont get submitted with an armbar from guard too often.

But i trained in bjj before moving here and i love it. great exercise. Also trained in muay thai which was alot of fun cause i like getting punched. Weeeeeeeeeeee

Where did you get your bullshit from? Aikido has no real world basis in a fight. Go watch more Steven Segal movies bud.

What is the first thing they teach you in Aikido? UKEMI. The art of falling. Better translation, the art of falling to make your opponent throwing you look really fucking good.

Aikido. I wasted 2 years of my life with it.

All of those fighters you just named all cross train now. It's a new sport. Maybe you've heard of it. It's called NHB/MMA.

Wresting as their base, BJJ, MT, and boxing as well as others to round it out.

No one trains in one style anymore.

Was stabbed in the ass by my girlfriend with a cheap samurai sword once. Nothing like getting stitches in your ass.

Not really. They dont knock people out and they dont submit people. They train submission so they can avoid them.

I'm not hard, and don't try to be. I'm curious about the battle scars of the self-proclaimed hard mother fuckers here at GFY. Don't get it twisted.

I almost got shot with an arrow once...

An AR15 doesn't sound like an AK47. 5.56 is a pop gun compared to 7.62. From either end you definetly know the difference.

Oh I read your post again... maybe you're talking about a 7.62 AR15 (If there is such a thing).

This is completely wrong. Most forms of Kung Fu are practical. Try some Wing Chun, or Hung Gar. These aren't created for show... in fact, if they were, they'd be pretty boring to watch.

I've seen it plenty of times. The word Kung Fu is extremely broad, and encompasses all Chinese martial arts, from Hung Gar to Southern Mantis to Tai Chi. They all have their benefits and weaknesses, but Southern Mantis, for instance, doesn't require rigid forms and is extremely practical.

And don't say Bruce Lee, who was trained in Wing Chun, couldn't fight, even before he took on American boxing.

Having said all that, I think a lot of the traditional martial arts are too rigid in their adherence to tradition, and lose a lot of the practicality as a result.
