Back in 91 I was driving home from a bar at 3am and was pulled over and brought to the police station for DUI. Only problem for them is that I wasn't drinking (I was a DJ).

Long story short they had me confused with someone else. They didn't put me in a cell but they took my shoes and told me to stay put while they sorted it all out.

They let me go after a few hours but not before I saw all kinds of people thrown into jail cells.

Just being jail-cell adjacent was enough of a scare for me.

Two real life events to share with strangers:

Thirty years ago, I was very stressed out regarding ongoing litigation I was deep into that was two years going non stop.

I was wrongfully arrested (that what everyone says, right?) for another matter, and booked into County Jail for the weekend. My cell mate was a local latino gang banger who was also the "cell block" boss everyone respected.

Come Monday is my first appearance in Court, and my dad appeared to get me bailed out. I begged him not to. Those three days in jail, where I could do nothing about anything, was a mental vacation I badly needed.

Next situation, I was living in Southern California and was feeling depressed about the financial hardships I was going through. I pointed my vehicle south, drove across the border to Mexico, and saw the ghetto life most people lived in Tijuana.

I ate some tacos, and drove back home, feeling grateful, and appreciative of what I did have at the time, which was significantly more than those living in MX.
