				Windows Media Player & Htaccess?

Do any of you have a solution for members who get an error when they are trying to DL a .wmv file in a members section?

Since they upgraded to WMP 9 it gives the error: 0x80070005: Cannot access or cannot play the file Saying that the user needs a license to DL the clips. I know telling them to 'Save Target As', but is there anything else I can do? Thanks - |

I thought they had a bug fix for this? I am still using WMP 7.1 so things usually work.

Are your .wmv files embedded? Or do your surfers click on a link directly to the .wmv file? I know .mpg files will play if they are embedded. If you link directly to the file, it asks for you username/password. Try embedding the clips, are tell your users to right click/save as to see the files.

Microsoft has removed all support for the HTTP Basic Authentication protocol for streaming media in the 9 Series platform components. This decision was made because the Basic Authentication protocol sends the user credentials over the network without the use of any encryption. This means that malicious users can monitor network traffic and obtain user credentials in streaming scenarios, because none of the streaming media protocols support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). The 9 Series platform components offer the Digest and Negotiate (NTLM/Kerberos) authentication protocols as a replacement for the inherently nonsecure HTTP Basic authentication protocol for streaming media. For content that is served from a Web server (by means of a progressive download) using SSL (that is, HTTPS://), you can still use HTTP Basic authentication with 9 Series components. SSL provides a layer of encryption to help protect the end user credentials even when HTTP Basic Authentication is used. If SSL is not used on the Web server, make sure that Basic Authentication is not enabled. Otherwise, even if other authentication methods are enabled, the Player may still stop responding with the following error message: Error: 0x80070005 -- Access Is Denied MORE INFORMATION The information in this article applies to the beta release of Windows Media Player 9 Series. HTTP BASIC Authentication has been added to the product for its release. For more information and to download the latest version of the Windows Media Player, visit the Microsoft Download Center Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/s...displaylang=en |
