My LCD critique

I got a new LCD screen a few days ago.... it's not a $9k state-of-the-art Bill Gates is the only fucker that has one special or anything.... just your run of the mill HP LCD. It's new. I got it because I need to reclaim some desk surface.

What I've noticed.... it's nice and bright.... looks good.... but when you get in close, shit gets blurry. REAL damn blurry. I wouldn't recommend one for anything other than very occasional use. I look at this one maybe a combined 20 minutes a day. It's only for switching a few things.

For design work? Never. You'll go blind. My 24" Sony widescreen CRT gets here on Tuesday..... that's the shizzle for design baby. LCD is great for conserving desk surface.... but I couldn't look at one all day long.

You must be more sensitive than me. (Images of Amp in a dress aside...) I don't notice much of a problem, seems clear. I prefer an LCD because no flicker means less eye strain.

The blur is probably because the three colors of each pixel are offset. Some drivers help with it a little, I think, so it may depend on the OS and the drivers and the monitor and so forth.

Or maybe HP sent you a dud. They aren't know for hardware quality.

eh, i'm just looking for accuracy. my old razer 2000 dpi mouse bit the dust, and the new 800dpi optical is fairly decent, but sometimes i'd like a little more accuracy out of it.

i should just bite the bullet and buy another razer, but i can only buy them in like a case of 6. that blows, i don't really need 6 of them.

Why don't you buy a decent LCD instead of buying a shitty one and bitching about it being Blury.

Are you running Analog or Digital and what video card? Hopefully not a shitty G4 MX card.

I wanted a cheap ass one. I never intended to stare at it all day. It's a utility screen.

An HP LCD? Probably some rebranded generic POS.

The LCD I have turns me off, because the native resolution is 1600x1024 at 17", and it's a pain to design in.

I now use an LCD - Dell 18" - I get in close on this thing and I can see every pixel of text on every website/page/document, you name it. It's laser-like, crystal clear and I love it. Personally, I will never go back to a CRT...this just works for me.

One thing I have noticed...it sure highlights mistakes I have made on earlier designs...particularly less than flawless cropping of images & really all kinds of stuff I could have never seen on my CRT...big reason why I trimmed down my profile so dramtically

LCD's suck.. very slow pixel response time.

CRT's always have much better picture quality, and they do not flicker if you set the refresh rate high.

Waycom Tablet... I have one they are GREAT!!!!

I highly suggest getting one if you like to draw... much easier than with a mouse. Better control and movement... just like a regular pen or pencil in your hand.

The very nature of "refresh rate" means they flicker. If you set it higher, you may not notice it consciously, but it is there.

Sometimes i wonder where you ever got your exhaulted status as a designer. Perhaps from all your buddies here or from your inflated post count. In any event i seriously have to wonder about anyone in the design biz who doesnt know the benefits of wacom tablets or lcd displays. Are you just acting stupid or is this thread for real? No wait, i forgot, have to keep that post count up.

Amp,

I have two of the high end of the 17" LCD lines (Samsugn SyncMaster 171P) and they are stunning. Crystal clear and absolutely no blur. Colors are as good if not better than my old Samsung CRT.

Make sure you have a good video card, run their NATIVE resolution and MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!! -> DIGITAL OUTPUT from the video card!

I cheaped out on that and have two video cards one digital and one analog. The monitor that's on the analog, has the colors a bit 'off' but it's not blurry at all.

I'm getting the MATROX dual digital output video card and that's going to be heaven.

Lots of people (and mostly designers) don't like LCDs but I don't think most have actually used a high end LCD that was setup properly on the system.

oh and Lane, any of the newest LCDs have a very fast pixel response rate. you can watch 30fps dvds without a glitch.

Then you obviously have not experienced a high-quality LCD with a lower response time.

Right now, you can get an LCD at around a 15 RT easy-- And you won't know the difference.

Also, as what was said before, you have to get an LCD with digital output. You have to get a video card that can support DVI, but it's totally worth it.

It's better than my old 15" Sony CRT
No blurs at all. You must use an LCD at its native resolution.

oh and here comes the voice of wisdom from the peanut gallery.

1. I never said I didn't know what a wacom tablet is... I said it was gay and I have no use for one.

2. I'm critiquing a $300 HP LCD that I'm using for a utility screen on a computer thats sole purpose is to house mp3s.... not a fucking laser sharp NASA monitor used to split fucking atoms.

Pay attention next time moron.

a lower refresh rate and playing with the phase adjustment (versus the auto setup) seemed to clean it up here.... but I still couldn't look at an LCD all day.

I'm using two of the Apple LCD Screens -- a 23" Cinema Display on my Mac G4 Desktop and a 17" Studio Display on a Dell Windows Box.. love them both.

Can't complain about the crispness or the resolution -- simply fantastic screens.

Amp. I think the point is that you bought a $300 lcd monitor and don't like it for design. Cool, I got no problem with that. Everyone has a different opinion of what looks good. The thing is that based on your observations of this admittedly cheap therefore inferior monitor you are recommending against using lcd for design work. What you should have said was "I bought a cheesy $300 lcd monitor and it sucks, make sure you buy a good one if you're planning on using it for design work."

As for your comments about the tablet, you lost me there. If you have no need for one then it makes sense that you would't want one but why in the world is it gay to use one?

I like people with strong opinions, I'm highly opionated myself and love to get into a good debate, but sometimes the things you say are just plain dumb. Dude, your 36 years old. Why don't you try to act like you've gained some wisdom in those years instead of acting like a punk in high school?

Oh, and for those of you that act like you're somehow intimidated by the great and mighty Amp, get some balls. He's a fucking web designer with some talent. BFD.

I'm giving my opinion (critique) on the LCD monitor that I bought. Plain and simple. I didn't buy it to do design work on. That was never my intention. I was simply commenting that it is not nearly as sharp and clear and the CRTs I have. Also, I have done design on LCDs in the past, and I didn't like it then either. If you don't like my opinion, then disagree with it. If it bothers you to the point that you somehow feel I've done some great injustice to the computing world, then get the fuck out of my thread and go do something else.

Again... for the millionth time.... GFY is a place to have some fun. It's not the fucking tech lab at Sony. And who the fuck are you to tell me how I should act? I'm acting like a punk in high school because I called a wacom tablet gay? You've got some relaxation issues. But, I'm going to do you a personal favor. From this point on, any exchanges between you and I will be 110% straight up business and professional. You want me to act 36, I will. And I will expect the same from you.

Whoa, be careful dude, that reply sounds like something one would read on Ynot. I thought you were supposed to tell me to eat shit and die or something.

Obviously, I've misjudged you and upon reflection I realizes that I should keep telling myself that GFY is here for entertainment. The thing that threw me off was the fact that your original post was what seemed like a serious review of some equipment you bought and were less than satisfied with. Later in response to another seemingly serious question about a wacom tablet you shifted gears and gave a typical GFY answer.

If you and I ever have the opportunity to have business dealings together I would expect you to be 110% professional and I would be the same. Other times I will do my best to relax and allow that to dip to around 95% or so. So, in the spirit of my newfound relaxed GFY attitude... Go Fuck Yourself.

Get a real LCD and compare it with a CRT in the same price range..

Absolutely no comparison. Period.

I'm running a Samsun 191t right now, and it's so far ahead of the oldish trinitron I had it's not funny.

Now.. cheapass LCD's do suck balls, I've seen a few. Plus this thing wasn't too cheap either.. $800

How much screen size do you lose from using the 19" flat vs the 21" tube? I currently use a 21" NEC CRT but want to get a 20" Flat but those are still a little pricey since I don't want to get a crappy brand.

Actually you can get a new Dell 20" UltraSharp on Ebay for around $800. Not bad considering four years ago I paid almost two grand for a 21" CRT.
