You can now get up to 14 years in prison for growing more than 50 pot plants in Canada. It used to be only 7.

245 million dollars over 5 years for an anti-drug use campaign...sounds like my tax money is being well spent.

That's almost as smart as the 30 million they wasted on the advertising for the gun registry.

rest assured - if not wasted on giving special interest groups free money to tell people what to do, it would still be wasted elsewhere.

LOL ya no shit....they must be talking about JUST the city of Vancouver. All of Canada would be at least 2 million people.

Here in Vancouver the statistics say there is one Grow Opereration on every city block. Estimation a total of 27,000 Grow Ops in the city of Vancouver.

This new decriminalization law must be more important in the rest of Canada, because in British Columbia there hasnt been a Jail Sentence related to Marijuana since 1977. I know a few people who had 2,000 plant Grow Ops busted and were only fined, no jail time.

Yup, I've known people too and none were ever jailed...fined up the wahoo and not allowed to own firearms/weapons while on probation....but never jailed....

I can see this as one step forward though...a small step...but a step none the less.

*******
"Why it is being proposed at this time when we have not taken it to the public and tested it in a federal election is beyond me," said Liberal MP Dan McTeague.
*******

Errm, my guess is most Canadians would support the new proposals....he assumes that they would not....he should quit while he's ahead....silly man...

The US is voicing their opinion now:

http://www.sanmateocountytimes.com/S...419810,00.html

"Canada is an exploding source of highly-potent marijuana," said John P. Walters, director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy, in a phone interview. "It's a multibillion-dollar industry and most of the production is headed south."

U.S. Ambassador Paul Cellucci earlier this month hinted that northern border checks will become more stringent -- resulting in travel delays and huge added costs to Canadian exporters -- if the country loosens its marijuana laws.

Walters stopped short of threatening a border crackdown if Canada passes the bill -- and passage seems inevitable given the commanding majority Prime Minister Jean Chretien enjoys in Parliament -- but pointedly noted that such countries as Mexico and Colombia support eradication of marijuana crops while "Canada seems to be going in another direction."

"We don't want the border with Canada looking like the U.S.-Mexico border," Walters said, an allusion to the almost military-style border patrols along the southern boundary compared to the traditionally relaxed controls to the north.

I see nothing wrong with that. Grow it yourself if you really want to have some.. It'd be cheaper anyways..

Cheers,
Matt

You don't think throwing someone in prison for 14 years for growing some plants is a bit too extreme, especially considering they are decriminalizing the act of smoking it?

Where is the logic in what they are doing? Let's make everyone more relaxed about smoking the stuff, but let's fuck them up the ass with a bloody pipe if they dare to grow it.

I don't even care about decriminalizing pot, I hardly ever touch the stuff. But I don't like the insane penalties our government likes to dish out for certain crimes for no reason at all.

i know a guy that got a $1000 fine for having 30 plants on a hydro set up in his house.. the cops came around and instead of talking to them at the door he was so paranoid he was sure they were there for him so he let them in and they obviously found them.. they were there to issue a summons to a previous tenant... damn.. .. still a $1000 fine for a production facility worth 66k every 12 weeks..

Walters is no longer the US drug czar.

80% of america is pro med pot/decrim. Th adminstration is changing its tune toward education/rehab for abusers of hard drugs but they still don't get MJ.

The advertising programs are great -the ad men that get the cash are the ones on the advisory boards recomending increased funding. The rehab programs are there to. All long time friends of the Bush family. Heavy campain contribitors. Faith based intiatives
are code for public funding of the business of Bush's friends.

What is really laughable about that US ambassador's comments is that he seems to forget that 12 US states had decriminalized long before we ever did. Did anyone hear the Canadian gov't making such idiotic statements back then? I didn't.

But they may have occured..... there are some complete morons in our gov't too rest assured.

Yes, it has been legalized in some states for medical use only... however, on the federal level it is still a crime and the feds are busting people who have been allowed by the state to produce for medical patients.

There is/was an article on NORMAL where a 57 year old woman was knocked down to her knees outside her home in California when the DEA busted in.

Here is the whole story:

http://www.eroticskins.com/News.asp?newsid=11

Interesting reading...
