Most overrated album, band and artist

I've just listened to Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys for the 10th time, and it still sucks. Two good songs don't turn a pile of manure into what some call one of the greatest albums in the history of music.

The most overrated band is easily the Grateful Dead. A fun sideshow, a circus act with 3 or 4 catchy tunes, but nothing more.

The most overrated artist is that insufferable hahahaha Bob Dylan. Whining about the trivialities of your daily life doesn't make you a philosopher.

hardly.. sure, you can not like an album because it doesn't fit your taste, but alot of the songs on the black album were awesome in terms of music complexity and emotion. so, even though it went mainstream, doesn't mean the music was bad or over rated.

If it is such a crap album why do you listen to it 10 times?

So who do you rate? That goes for Labret as well.

Always remember you not liking it, does not mean it's crap. It just means you do not like it.

Atari Teenage Riot:

I kept hearing how good these guys are...with their punk/electronica sound. So I downloaded a bunch of their stuff of Kazzaa.

Im glad I never bought any of their albums. That band sucks soooo fucking bad!

Greatful Dead:

Ive been to a show, own an album or two. I enjoy their music... but hell... Jerry is not the God that the hippies made him out to be. Their band isnt all that good either.

Most pop 40 shit is overrated too.. but thats how it's supposed to be.. thats all done because of GOOD marketing.

I wanted to like it (since it's supposedly a masterpiece). Sometimes an album can grow on you. Sadly, Pet Sounds is an average Beach Boys album. Nothing more.

Hmm, that makes it a bit tougher, then. For current stuff, I'd say Evanescence wins hands-down for most overplayed single, and Linkin Park for most overrated band as well as for most consistently overplayed singles in the last year. I haven't heard a band hyped as much as Linkin Park since the Meat Puppets' "Backwater" was in hourly rotation on most rock/alt stations several years back, they're definitely today's poster child for the RIAA marketing-machine.

Looking at the long term? I'll give Joe Sixpack what he's lookin' for, most overrated band is probably the Beatles, though I never really liked much of their stuff anyway, so I guess I'm biased there. Guns 'n Roses would probably be my alternate. Most overrated song ever, Stairway to Heaven - yeah, it was good, the first 10,000 times I listened to it... Most overrated album is a difficult call. I hate to knock the Beatles twice by saying the White album, so I'll go out on a limb: Zeppelin IV, even though I like Zeppelin.

During the late 60s and early 70s we had these Pesuedo hippy types who would follow all these obscure bands. Some no one had ever heard of. They just did it to appear cool.

I think a true guage of an artists worth is the number of years after they started that people still listen to them. Chopin and Brahms to Dylan and the Beatles.

They are entertainers and artists so the only way to judge them is the number of times they entertained.

As far as I'm concerned popularity has nothing to do with it.

I love The Beatles but I couldn't give a fuck about how many people bought their albums.

My view is that the only relevent criteria for most art is:

1) Were they true innovators or simply glorified plagarists?
and
2) How broad is their influence?

Agreed and if you look at the ones that stayed most of them are originals or took an idea and improved on it.

Yes we have them. "scenesters" or "six month faces" we call them.

To insinuate that someone listens to music that others do not simply to look cool... is absurd. My dad likes really obscure bagpipe music, he certainly does not like it to look cool. I have a friend who is obsessed with hungarian folk music, and not because it makes him look cool. I have my niche, you have yours.

Yours is prepackage corporate garbage, mine is not. Your music is an insult to my intelligence.

Whats the difference between Led Zep, Pink Floyd, and a Big Mac?

Absolutely nothing.

Jimmy Page created melodies that will be remembered centuries from now. Pink Floyd takes your mind on a journey from which you rarely return unchanged. They are the Beethoven and Bach of our era.

Big Mac = top 40, pop, flavor of the month
Fine wine = Led Zep, Floyd and other bands whose music has stood the test of time

I can see how you could compare Avril Lavigne (is that how it's spelt?) or Britney Spears to a Big Mac but I think bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Beatles are in a different class. I definitely have a problem with the marketing - money grubbing greatest hits after greatest hits collections being spewed out of the machine. I agree its all a bit pathetic.

But at the same time, when some corporate manufactured product like Britney Spears or Eminem starts composing John Lennon type material or learns how to play the guitar like Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page I'll eat my fucking hat. And then I'll start on my shoes.

Dave Matthews -

I think its safe to say that the last 2 albums have sucked big time..

and every year after year he hikes up his ticket prices..

its somelike like 75 or 80 bucks for a seat to see him live, and hes just gonna play a lot of his new shit..

and when I say shit I mean shit.

pet sounds is a master piece of an album... it's not as immediate as other beachboys stuff, and isn't as fun.. but it's still brian at the height of his powers and teetering on the edge of his descent into drug fuelled insanity.

but i do agree that without god only knows and good vibrations the album would be far, far less significant.

As far as bands that shouldn't have been given any airplay at all, how about Oasis?

U2 also seems to have been elevated to some mythical status they surely don't deserve.

The Doors were good, but not THAT good. I guess we have Oliver Stone to blame for all their continued hype.

Pet Sounds is far from your average Beach Boys album. It truly is a sonic masterpiece. You have to understand the circumstances under which the album was made, as well as the techniques used to put it together. It's basically an album of sound samples...something which was most impressive in the day and today.

This is my most favorite album, and it was tops on the list of many others. John Lennon included.

I'll agree with Paul Simon & the Dead. The rest of your list is horseshit. Pink Floyd, Led Zep & U2 were/are some of the greatest bands of all time & amazing songwriters. Floyd was the furthest thing from a Top 40 band, they went out of their way to NOT write singles. Why don't you pick on some acts that deserve it like most of the rap/crap/bubblegum pop/singles-driven shit music that exists now...

Come on now, you can't say Led Zep and Pink Floyd are even in the same category. Just because they're "classic rock" now, doesn't mean they were then.

Pink Floyd made their stuff, and if you read interviews with them, they say quite plainly that the stuff they were making wasn't popular. They did it for "arts" sake.

As for Led Zep, they were always a rock band.. Both of these bands were before the whole "Manufacture the artist" thing came around, and they're both amazing bands.

Overrated, who gives a shit? I don't subscribe to any ratings magazine, or listen to music radio for that matter.

They're two examples of good things that came out of the 70s.

Alot of you guys are young so you dont know but when Pet sounds came out there was nothing ever created like it, it was a one of a kind. Also it was recorded on a 8 track recorder, like Sgt Pepper was done on a four track.Thats hard to imagne, when we live in a world today where most studios recording is digital and there are as many tracks as they want. Led Zepplin also when they created that music, no one else was doing it.They were the first, their influences were blues, country music, Elvis and the music of the fifties nothing that sounded like hard rock. There were no hard rock acts in 1969. Today everyone is a copy of someone else. Also when music became a visual medium, the quality of the musicans went dont the toilet. The main thing now is are they good to look at.

Beethoven is the Beethoven of our era. Thats why Beethoven is Beethoven and not Meyerbeer or some other mostly forgotten composer.

Don't fool yourself, in 200 years he'll still be Beethoven, but people will be saying "Who the hell was Jimmy Page?"

This is esp. true when the Beethoven in question is being conducted by Wilhelm Furtwangler in the series of obscure live recordings he made in Berlin during the height of WW2... my little musical fetish.

I would have thought someone who had made their money by catering to deviants (paraphrased from another thread), you would appreciate the art of prepackaged corporate garbage.

I agree
Brittaney
Christina and all those other girls arn't musicians, their barely singers, their just sexy young bitches that boys want to stare at, and girls want to be like what ever boys stare at because they want the boys to want them.

I think that's also why live show's have become so much of a spectacle these days. Even 10-12 years ago live shows were about hearing what the band could do live. Now recording technology can make crap sound good on a CD, so live shows have to be about lasers and fireworks and dancers and nudity. Anything to take the listeners mind off the crap that is coming out of the speakers.

The Doors.
Actually just Jim Morrison was overrated.
The rest of the band was underrated. Great musicians over shadowed by an attention whore's childish antics and acid inspired mindless-word-drool "poetry".

James Hetfield.

He sounds great on albums when his voice has been dolled up by a recording engineer, but live? Holy fuck.. I don't think I've ever heard someone who makes a living singing with such a talent for not being able to sing in the same key for more than 3 seconds at a time.

I like some of their old recordings, but he's painful to have to listen to live.
