Need help with installing a DVD-ROM...

I've got a 40 GB HD as my master and a 10 GB HD as a slave.
I also have a CD-RW setup. I wanna get the DVD-ROM in there too.
Right now, when I wanna use the DVD, I gotta shut down, unhook the CD-RW, hook up the DVD and restart... Major pain in the ass...

Any advice?

Why don't you put the DVD on the same cable as the CDRW

I'd put the HD with the OS as the primary master!

I have been using the cd as master for years, and HD with OS as slave....works all the time, no probs. Just built 3 comps this week with CD-RW as primary master, and OS drives as primary slave and all three setup without a hitch. No hardward/software issues at all. *shrug*

Or, set jumpers on all drives to Cable Select and let the cables and bios do the figuring out....

exactly why i wanna see the jumpers. Unless it's well indicated where to put the jumpers for what setup. Sometimes you have to figure it out.

i'll take a look at it tomorrow and try again. it's something i haven't bothered with in months, but TDF's HD problem thread reminded me

Sure! I'll give you 1 neXbuck per signup (on top of your regular payout) hehe and I'll order the DVD burner from Micro-Extreme in Montreal (if they still exist) so it'll be dirt cheap.

The computer I am on now has 3 hard drives, and a CD burner in it. I can set all the jumpers to cable select, hook up the primary and secondary cables in the proper order, and it will all work fine. And it is a windows 2k server box. No conflicts at all.....whether it is a burner, DVD player, hard drive, card reader etc. etc....

What I meant is that some drives don't have a little graphic saying where to put the jumpers for master or slave or cable select. They just throw a jumper in the Masters (at least it was like that with old maxtors).

That's odd. I just looked at an old WD Caviar 1.2 gig drive I have that is probably 5+ years old and it even has a setting for cable select, and it isn't hard to find where to put the jumper, it is stamped on the board.
I have never installed a DVD drive, so it may be different, but I messed with 2 LG cd writers this week and a Creative Labs CD drive and they all had master/slave/cable select jumper settings plain as day. I would think any DVD player/writer would have it written on the housing somewhere, or at least in the manual.

oh it's definitly in the manual... but who keeps those? The only drives that didn't have it indicated on the drives were old maxtor... that's why i memorised the master an slave position

Isn't there a legend on the decal pasted on the housing? I have 4 maxtors here, and 3 Quantums and the jumper settings are all the same, and my oldest quantum is about 3 years old. How old are the drives you are using? My oldest quantum has the jumper settings on the drive. Any maxtor I have owned has the same jumper settins as Quantum, even before Maxtor took over Quantum.

I should post a pic of this 1.2 gig WD Caviar I have. Most reliable drive I ever owned...RIP. It is too small to use anymore. It was one of the first 'large' drives I ever bought, used, from some guy out of the Bargain Finder in Edmonton many many years ago. The thing still ran perfect with no bad sectors up until a week ago when I rebuilt the comp it was in.
