Your plans for your death... Cremation or Burial?

Me? Simple cremation, non religious service, ashes sprinkled in the same 'Garden of Remembrance' as the other members of my family before me...

    You?

My father and I had that conversation many years ago. He sat me down in the dining room and placed a shoe box between us on the table.

As he began to remove the lid, he stated that trash collection was Thursday mornings. From inside the box he pulled out a 1.5 inch wide PVC pipe with caps at both ends.

He ordered me to cremate his remains, pour enough of his ass-hes into the pipe to fill it, and whatever was leftover to toss out Wednesday night. The pipe was to be buried at the location where first wife was laid to rest.

His ex absolutely despised him. As I believe in spirits and allowing the dead to RIP, I chose to not disrespect the ex by burrowing his ass-hes into her grave.

        Cremation.

My father died when I was a baby, and he is buried between my grandmother's house and my aunt's house in New Jersey. When I was a teenager I would spend hours there listening to my boom box and smoking cigarettes. It was a sad, depressing place. Every time I return "home" to NJ it's the very first place I visit. We usually land at JFK or Newark, and my father's garve is on the way to where we usually spend time at in NJ.

I don't want that for my kid. Cremation and then bury the ashes at sea in Hawaii at Waikiki Beach where we have a condo. Done. When my kid comes to "visit" me she can have fun at the beach instead of a freaking cemetery.

Yup. Plus it leaves an 'obligation' for those still alive to go visit 'The Grave' - Scattered ashes and nothing to visit, free loved ones up from feeling guilty.

I have already told my family that I want to be cremated after my death and have my ashes scattered at sea. I'd rather people who love me keep me in their memory than having to visit a sinister place.

You also have the option of donating your body to science, in which case it is possible that your amputated head will end up in a tik tok or instagram video of a plastic surgery class in Turkey.

Better than having to buy a 6 person burial plot. Well, better than the government having to buy it I suppose, as Im going to be having a paupers funeral paid by them anyway - "He died as he lived his life" - Via government handouts

I had started many years ago to put payments down on a plot for my wife and I - and just recently finished paying off the stone marker. I've had the discussion with my dad who was very religious and explained over the years you're going to be dust and ashes anyways so either way you'll get the same results.

He opted for cremation as am I. No sense spending all that extra money for no need and especially when it comes for plots - you have extra space in case of emergency if someone in the family needs it.

People fear it I think because for some reason they think they'll feel it - which is untrue. If you're a christian and feel cremation is wrong then I only have to remind you of the many christians who were burned at the stake for what they believed. Made no difference to God and certainly not the person afterwards.

My wife is still undecided so - going to have to leave it up to her. Most people don't want to think about it since it maybe to far off for them I suppose.

That's all I can say on the subject.

When I was a kid cremation was prohibited by the Church; apparently they changed their mind.

Very true - here in Canada not only have they changed their minds on that but also mixed marriages (black and white) but mostly at least in my they are accepting of gay - lesbian and even trans people which I find shocking since I grew up in the days when everyone wore a suit and there were more cultural rules during the 60's. They also have for some set aside the choir and opted for bands and more youth involvement - allow smoking and moderate drinking along with several other things that were once banned. It's not perfect but at least I see them trying.

I've paid for a cremation package from Neptune Society. We used Neptune Society to cremate my wife's father when he died earlier this year. They handled everything from start to finish. Since I'm older than my wife by 22 years, I wanted to give her a clean finish and a fresh start.
