I forgot about LOTR. If the last movie is as good as the first, I'd have to put the complete trilogy in the great movies category too.

The first Harry Potter was great, this last one I was not impressed with. However the 2nd LOTR was better then the first.

More movies...

Enemy of the State
Bladerunner
Air Force One
Armageddon
Cruel Intentions
Die Hard 1,2,3
Forest Gump
Faceoff
Independence Day
Mission Impossible 1,2
Remeber the Titans
Rounders
Unbreakable
Xmen

You probably would enjoy Clerks if you haven't seen it.

Good call, great movies.

Opening scene in Saving Private Ryan is pretty gruesome but so is the wire scene in Ghost Ship.

If we are talking about comedies we gotta include Kevin Smith movies!

Clerks
Mall Rats
Chasing Amy
Dogma
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

My favorite is Mall Rats "The kid is still on the escalator"

Gotta love movies like the Breakfast Club that rely on clever dialog and simple production, using a school for the set for the entire movie....and Kevin Smith with Clerks and Mall Rats, instead of relying on special effects and cheezy dialog!

I am sickened and deeply despressed that nobody mentioned Ghostbusters!

I like a lot of the 80's movies since I was growing up then , and you could easily submerse yourself in a movie when your between 6 and 12 years old.

As far as recent movies, Im not gonna bother listing my favs but I just saw 'the transporter' last weekend and it was pretty cool. They took a lot of cues from Jackie Chan films it seems.

Its definitely one of the greatest stories I've ever read. Stephen King is famous for horror, but quite a few of his horror novels have been relative duds. With some obvious exceptions (The Stand, Carrie, Salems Lot, The Dead Zone etc) his short stories and novellas are where its at.

we have these threads every couple months and my moods and list always change a little...

a lot if depends too...some movies are just great cinema, some are those cheesy comedies you know all of the dialog to, still laugh at after 20-30-40 viewings, etc. and my passion, very low budget/no budget horror and sci-fi and independent cinema...even some of the artsy fartsy stuff..

my top ten in no particular order:
A Clockwork Orange
Memento
Glengarry Glen Ross
The Exorcist
Bad Taste (Peter Jackson looong before LOTR, a mustsee of PJ fans)
Requeim For A Dream
Opera (Dario Argento is an Italian horror movie immortal)
Ringu (original Japanese version of "The Ring")
Star Wars
Black Christmas

honorable mentions:
"Welcome To The Dollhouse"
"Super Troopers"
"The Breakfast Club"
"Ice From The Sun" (extremely low budget horror/sci-fi flick that is a bit pretentious, but an amazing visual flick and a very unique story, marred slightly by some poor acting and obviously low low low budget gore effects...but gotta love the scene with the farmer dragging the naked girl behind his truck down a gravel road, then stopping to cover her with rock salt...well, not love, but...)
"Donnie Darko"
"Suspuria"
"Scarface"
"Friday The 13th"
"A Nightmare On Elm Street"
"Bay Of Blood"
"Reversal Of Fortune"

fun, cheap ass low/no budget bad movies that I lvoe to watch:
"Plan 9 From Outer Space"
"Loster Man From Mars" (a great parody of so bad they're god sci-fi movies)
"Slaughter House"
"City Of The Dead" aka "Gates Of Hell"
"Samson Vs. The Supreme Dictator From Outer Space"
"There's Something Out There"
"Evil Toons" (think Roger Rabbit possessed by Satan terorizing a couple college girls and a lot of naked tits)

I could go on and on and on.....hehehe

The Nightmare Before Christmas. (Must see for both Halloween and Christmas)

Labyrinth

The Princess Bride (he didn't come!)

The Dark Crystal

Rush Hour

Pretty much any Disney flick except for Pocahontas and the Little Mermaid.

Maverick

Tombstone

The Breakfast Club

From Dusk til Dawn

Interview with the Vampire

EDIT: Oh yeah! Gotta add Clash of the Titans for groovy yet terribly done B-rated flick. Rocky Horror fits into the B-rated category as well.

more as I think of them. I need coffee.
