Why is Vivid marketing itself to kids?

From Los Angeles Daily News: Vivid Entertainment Group will introduce a snowboard this fall featuring the "Vivid Girls," the Los Angeles Daily News reports. The boards will retail for about $400, specially packaged in a black bag. Travis Wood, director of marketing for Sims Snowboards, said the target audience is 13- to 21-year-olds.

Vivid president Steven Hirsch would argue the demographic is older as some of the women displayed on the board are topless, an option potential customers will have to mull over. Some California retailers have already vowed not to sell the boards. Sport Chalet has carried Sims products for several years but decided the Vivid boards were inappropriate.

"We have a family store here. And we've decided not to carry such a product because we don't think our core customer would be interested," said Howard Kaminsky, Sport Chalet's chief financial officer.

If you can get someone to pay you money to display your brand all over the place, you do it.

who needs these uppity brick and mortar stores......

all Vivid has to do is put one big ad in a major snowboarder magazine and sell them through their own online store....or any online sports store that is willing to make some cash.

The only thing that sells better than sex is controversy.

Combine sex and controversy and you've got yourself a garaunteed hit product.

If you don't see something wrong with marketing porn to kids, then you are a moral idiot. It doesn't matter if adults also use the product (snowboard in this case).

always good to place investments in other industries for maybe a future solid income... but it takes a lot of cash ;)

Ever skiied or snowboarded before? Ever been on a mountain with 1000's of people around, waiting in line for the chairlift, people ALWAYS check out everyone elses equiptment, also on the chairlift, you have nothing better to do but check out other peoples stuff, and since 40% of people at the Hills are under 16, its sorta odd and the board will be exposed to a ton of kids.

One would assume that a 13 year old kid had parents that controled what he bought or didn't...

After all when my son asked for the 'naked lady' grips for his bike, I made the choice to tell him no.

Wow, interesting to see the responses.

It must be said that North America is one of the most conservative countries out there.

Go to most European countries and women wander the beaches topless. Toronto passed a law a couple of years ago allowing women to wander the streets topless if they want.

Breasts are not porn IMHO.

I watched a documentary once on the Netherlands called 'Sex, Drugs and Democracy'. (great movie....you should check it out)....

They asked folks wandering the streets in the Netherlands how they feel about women wandering around topless. The folks that answered were absolutely puzzled as to why this would even be an issue. It is very commonplace in their society and they have no trouble bringing their kids to the beaches....

Kids buy their snowboards from Wal-Mart. This one is $400. 1) How many kids can afford that? 2) How many parents would let them buy a snowboard with a pornstar on it?

As for others seeing people use these boards, that's like saying you can't wear a t-shirt in public that may be offensive to some people.

Besides, I don't think anyone is going to take a XXX snowboard to a family resort. That's one way to get in trouble pretty quick with management.

It seems to me...that parents are going to be involved in the purchase of something that will cost them $400.

If they see a snowboard with a topless chick on it, I would think the parents have enough intelligence to say...no.

On the other hand, my nineteen year old is going to want one.
