Reddit restricts pro-Trump community over violent threats

Reddit restricted its largest pro-Trump community Wednesday after some users threatened to harm politicians and the police because of the political impasse in Oregon.

The community, named r/The_Donald, has more than 754,000 subscribers and describes itself as a “never-ending rally dedicated to the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump.”

Reddit said the community’s page, known as a subreddit, was being quarantined over “significant issues” including “threats of violence against police and public officials.”

Visitors to the subreddit are now being greeted by a page that identifies the group as a repeat policy violator with a toxic symbol, along with the message, “Are you sure you want to view this community?” and a call to help vote down and report rule-breaking content. The quarantine also restricts the subreddit from appearing in popular feeds and search recommendations. Reddit also removed a custom styling that the community had been using to hide the downvote button on posts.

“Over the last few months, we have observed repeated rule-breaking behavior in your community and an over-reliance on Reddit admins to manage users and remove posts that violate our content policy, including content that encourages or incites violence,” a representative for Reddit wrote in a letter posted by a moderator for the pro-Trump community. “Most recently, we have observed this behavior in the form of encouragement of violence towards police officers and public officials in Oregon.”

Just a reminder that they promoted the White Nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

While they tried to distance themselves following anti-Semitic marches and murder of a protester, in 2017 the subreddit promoted Unite the Right white nationalist rally for a week with a stickied comment at the top of their page.[1] They publicly and openly supported a Neo-Nazi rally. The attendees were making Nazi salutes, flying Nazi flags, wearing Nazi clothes, shouting Nazi chants. Here is a documentary by VICE News of the Neo-Nazi rally that took place, the one President Trump defended by stating that there were fine people on this side too.[2]

They have also hosted AMAs with White Nationalists. For example last year they hosted an AMA with Faith Goldy - a White Nationalist that was running for Mayor in Toronto, Canada.[3]

Faith Goldy is a well known white nationalist and has espoused far right rhetoric including the great replacement conspiracy theory.[4] She has previously recited the hateful 14 word white nationalist slogan[5] and has gone so far as to recite it again while defending white nationalist views.[6] Her views were considered too far right for The Rebel media, a Breitbart-lite organization based in Canada, and she was fired from the organization after The Rebel faced harsh criticism for their coverage of the Charlottesville white nationalist rally.[7]

Despite an effort this week by Levant to distance The Rebel from the “alt-right” white nationalist movement that violently marched on the Virginia college town on the weekend, The Rebel’s sympathetic coverage of the movement’s racist provocateurs and their conspiracy theories led many of its best-known contributors to quit this week, including co-founder Brian Lilley and National Post contributors Barbara Kay and John Robson. On Thursday, Vice Media co-founder Gavin McInnes also reportedly departed. In an email to the media news site Canadaland, Levant said The Rebel had “tried to keep (McInnes), but he was lured away by a major competitor that we just couldn’t outbid.” McInnes did not respond to the Post’s request for comment.

Reddit's administration has a hands-off policy, meaning that they are not actively moderating content on subreddits, unless they are forced to do so (by various mechanisms).

In plain English: By and large, Reddit admins are not reading, and not moderating, what people post to subreddits. That's why they have Moderators.

T_D has been actioned three other times in their existence that I'm aware of, and each time they've moved away from the issues that Reddit administration brought up with them.

Mainly, T_D is "tolerated" by Reddit administration because Reddit administration wasn't getting abuse reports through the report system.

1/3rd of that was because the T_D mods disabled reporting via CSS changes, and

1/3rd of that was because no one banned from T_D could hit "Report" on a post or comment on the Desktop interface, and

1/3rd of that was because no one wanted to bother to do T_D mods' jobs for them, and scroll through their New and Comments queues, and fill out reddit.com: Log in.

Also, because there was no journalistic coverage of the content.

So, when someone started going through their New queue and Comments queue and reporting material that violated the Content Policy, directly to Reddit admins (which can be done by filling out reddit.com: Log in, or sending modmail to /r/reddit.com)

The admins had direct, first-hand, red-flag knowledge that the subreddit had content in it that violated the Content Policy.

They Quarantined the subreddit because it's SOP for Reddit administration to Quarantine subreddits where they consistently must take moderation actions because the moderators will not take action, or have demonstrated a willingness to ignore the part of the Reddit User Agreement Section 7 :

You agree that when you receive reports related to your community, that you will take action to moderate by removing content and/or escalating to the admins for review;

So, to RECAP:

T_D "moderators" weren't being babysat because Reddit admins don't want to babysit any community - which can be called "tolerating";

T_D "moderators" sabotaged the proper operation of their community and violated the Reddit User Agreement Section 7;

People posted content to T_D advocating for armed, violent political insurrection and political assassinations;

Journalists wrote about it;

Reddit administration was in a position where they could not claim that they were unaware, and therefore executives had to take action to enforce their User Agreement.

The Moral Of This Story: Reddit Administration isn't tolerating the existence of T_D -- WE ARE.

If people spent time reporting content on T_D that violates the User Agreement / Content Policy / clearly aids & abets violence -- to both Reddit Administration and to journalists -- then Reddit's administration would be forced to act.
