Becasue if he had pleaded innocent and if he was later conviced as gulity he wouldbe sentenced for the MAX.

This way by pleading guilty (even if he is innocent) the DA would give him a deal to get out early.

Thats how American Law is played.
Many innocent people plea guilty simply becasue if they dont they risk serious jail time if convicted and the deals are just too good not to plea guilty.
