18 months in jail for Bible-quoting rapist
Thursday, March 21, 2002
A BIBLE-QUOTING man was foiled in bid to rape a woman at knife-point when his intended victim wrested the knife from him and ran away to get help from the nearby army barracks.
Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo sentenced unemployed Caubati resident Nasomi Saloma, to 18 months in jail imprisonment for attempted rape in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.
Saloma, 24, admitted the facts and pleaded guilty.
Prosecutor Epeli Talakubu said at about 7pm on March 1 last year, the complainant was walking along Cunningham Road towards her home at Stage I, Cunningham, outside Suva, when Saloma joined her and started telling her stories from the Bible.
Prosecutor Talakubu quoted her as saying that Saloma was quite convincing in his telling of the biblical stories.
She thought he was a genuine believer even when, as the two reached an isolated spot on the road past the Army Engineers Barracks, he asked her if they could stop for a while and pray together.
Instead of praying, however, Saloma took out a penknife, held it to her throat and forced her to undress.
The complainant unbuttoned her pants and did as Saloma told her to do.
The court heard that she pulled down her trousers, then her panties to her knees while they were standing.
But while she was doing this she unexpectedly snatched the penknife from Saloma and ran to the nearby army barracks and asked for help.
The matter was reported police, who soon located Saloma and charged him.
In mitigation, Saloma said he was sorry and asked for leniency. He said he did not know what came over him to do such a thing.
?You?re a human being, you?re an adult and there are civilised ways of approaching a woman,? Mr Temo said.
?You used a knife on a lady to have her have sex with you; your liberty will be taken away from you. You have to go inside without a lady,? Mr Temo said.
