Actually I shouldn't say slow but it's by no means a "rocket"

And the rear of that car is UGLY.

i'm a real big rotary fan myself, and have two of the beautiful FD3S's (third-gen RX-7's)... but, the RX-8 seems a step backwards to me, kinda stripped down and crippled in some ways. the new version of the engine (Renesys) isn't going to be possible to add turbochargers or any form of forced-induction like the earlier examples so readily accepted... the intake manifold is solid cast and incorporates very narrow ports, hapmering any aggressive force-feeding.

also, the saturn-style third door is just plain ugly..

yeah, its true... at the last tokyo auto-salon showing, they had a Renesys engine bisected into quarters for display purposes along w/ some engineers... we started grilling them immidiately about the intake port configuration, as it is solid cast and literally part of the actual block..! it doesn't come off, ever. i guess you could take a bare block into a machine shop and hack the intake section out, and then fab your own replacement... but the rotor housings themselves have changed shape to accomadate the shortened intake ports, so force-feeding just isn't going to be as effective as we are used to on the earlier 7's... no Haltech E6K fuel goodness, no massive single turbos... i'm truly depressed about the whole thing, if you cant tell..

I used to drive an 82 Rx7. It had a 13b twin turbo motor in it and I had it do a 13.4 second 1/4 mile while being street legal. All up I payed A$11k for it (US$6900) and was an awesome car and stupidly fast for the price. A good way for any teen to try and kill themselves (like I did almost daily in that car).

Problem with the rotary engine is it is put together sideways, rather than top down like a piston engine. This means anytime anything breaks inside it, you need to take the whole engine out to repair it.

Lost of fun, but they use tons of fuel!

Tons of fuel, actually rotary engines are more fuel efficient.
However if you WOT every time mpg will go down a lot.

I read an article in Sport Compact Car Magazine about the RX-8. They said that it is common knowledge that the Mazda executives WANT to make a new RX-7 and they WILL if the RX-8 has good sales.

they used a blue on in the new movie Xmen 2.

It looked pretty nice.
But if they put those kind of restrictions on the engine, I woould say that they fucked them selves out of a ton of sales.

I guess I'm behind the times though..the only RX-7 I had any experience with was a Bonsai.. Ummm.. I think I just creamed thinking about it.

Edit: my bad, it was a 7 not an 8

actually, mazda did this stuff on purpose most likely... remember when the third-gen RX-7 was cancelled for the american market back in '95? that was mostly due to mazda taking massive losses doing warrantied repairs on thirdgen's at the dealerships, they had a lot of problems servicing this car from the beginning... many of the blown motors and torn up turbo systems that mazda had to eat the cost on were due to aftermarket electronics and the like, so mazda doesn't really want too much of a performance aftermarket for this one. if you notice, even though the RX-8 has been out a while in japan, no heavy modding scene has arisen at all, and thats rare for tokyo tuners..

That sucks, normally I would assume a turbo voids the warranty

all thirdgen's were twin-turbo though... most of the problems came from performance parts being bolted onto the factory engines and turbo system... blow-off valves, headers... some foolhardy types always tried to run nitrous through a rotary as well..

true foe, it will corner very good I think, I don't say it isn't fast, it can be matched by a Honda S2000.

S2000 is a VERY sweet car, but it only seats 2 .... no trunk space, so aimed towards a different crowd.
