I cut the cord

Last year we were paying $200 a month for the "digital" cable package which has hundreds of channels we never watch. This included two DVRs to record TV, and two other boxes to get a signal on other TVs. Six months ago I marched into their local office and told them I was thinking about switching over to their competitor and they quickly swapped out all of our gear, we dropped to one DVR, and our bill was $99 a month.

Over the past year we've been using Chromecast, Netflix, and more recently Hulu. We decided to try Hulu TV and it's great.... We get all of the channels we want, don't have to record anything because it's all streaming on demand, PLUS we have all of the other older TV content (on demand) PLUS HBO.... For $40 a month.

We get our Internet for free (from our HOA) so.... #winning

I don't pay a cent as I get the important channels from my digital antenna for free in high quality. I would never pay more than 20€ per month for anything TV related. 99% of the stuff on TV completely sucks, so I only turn it on before falling asleep, mostly news.

I cut the cord 3 years ago, and so many people here did that the cable company switched to metered billing 2 months ago #ThanksTrump . So now everyone pays, just for internet, more that the full package bundle I used to have with all the pay channels. Over $200 a month just for internet.

Cox Cable is evil. We live by the beach with cliffs and hills so mobile data is spotty and can't get good dish reception.

I don't watch the news much. I tend to watch only when there is a big news event, like a natural disaster. I read my news online.

I completely disagree. There is some great TV right now.

On top of that, we can go back and watch anything else from the past instantly.

Cable is long gone in my house.
Digi rabbit ears are all I need. T.V. is just ambient noise I have on in the background. Makes my dogs feel less lonely when I'm out.

You leave your dogs at home? You don't take them with you? Do you crate them?

I've seen more and more places offering stuff like this. Sling and YouTube both offer similar services. I wonder how many people are doing exactly what you did.

I have a feeling internet access is about to get more expensive.

We get Direct TV here with about 2,000 channels. I watch a handful at most. Music Choice Classic Rock is on now. I watch Netflix on iPad for two hours at night. I added the no DVR-cable box which they said I'd have to pay $5/month to have. It's also on the main TV but I've Beverly been asked to pay.

They have wifi with two connections, one for staff, one for us. I was afraid I'd be on 14.4 modem since I'm out in the woods.

Cable prices are lower than before the competition came along. I remember HBO at $24.95/month and the same movies over and over. My cable company blocked VCR recording so we got a descrambler. They began checking telephone poles for theft, devices and more. Never got caught as they targeted the drug areas, illegals' neighborhoods and the like. Projects, too. In good neighborhoods they thought everyone was rich and honest. Assumptions are stupid ;)

I do Netflix and Amazon Prime. Wasn't a big fan of Hulu. Cable is way overpriced and yeah you watch 10% of the channels you receive.

Switched to SlingTV a few months ago and haven't missed cable one bit. I actually like the new way of looking for shows to watch compared to just mindlessly flipping chanels.

I was s huge fan of SlingTV for about a year until I tried Direct TV NOW. Direct TV NOW is everything you get on their satellite service but streamed online. Direct TV NOW has a better interface and you get sot more for your money

my link is $400 per month, just to log onto the net. then I use Netflix and amazon and youtube.... check out amazon prime and check out the 'channels' you can rent per month on prime.

I usually rent a channel for a month and watch everything I want then go to another channel for a month ..

as far as thanking trump, trump didn't leave me in medical debut with health insurance that most drs wont accept, and a 300% raise health ins payment.

trust me on this Mr. B Wire, having fucked up cable ain't shit for a problem

Trump didn't give you affordable healthcare in the 468 days he's been in office?

Trump promised affordable healthcare but just passed a budget giving multinational corporations billions in tax breaks.

How much do you pay for cable? Were forced to pay about $200 a month here for enough bandwidth to watch Direct TV now, Netflix HBO go , and HULU

Late reply lol
If I'm gone for longer than a day I get a dog sitter. I have 4 small dogs, and i let them run around the house when I'm out, lots of room for them, pee pads on the ground, they are trained so very few messes when I get home.

No worries, I spoil them ;)

Lol at people getting raped (spending 200/month on some tv channels ).

Just lol, how someone could even consider that paying this would make any sense (except <<<<< 1% of people who are some sort f serial TV watchers).

Zero money management skills - can add that to the list of things about Rochard.

It's not always a matter of sitting in front of the TV all day, it is a matter of being able to watch the things you want. Let me give you an example. Where I live I could get "basic" cable for about $50/mo. I am a fan of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. Their games are broadcast on a channel that isn't available in the "basic" package. So, I have to buy the "sports" package which is an extra $15/mo. In order to get that package I have to upgrade my "basic" package to "digital" which costs an extra $25/mo. In order to get the "digital" package I have to have one of their retrievers which is another $10/mo. Add it all up and my $50/mo bill has doubled just so I can watch some baseball games.

The big problem with cable prices in the US is that there are a lot of places where there are is very little or no competition so if you want cable TV you have to pay the price for it. Obviously, with Hulu, YouTube and other things that is starting to change.

Well that's you.. Personally, there is no way I would ever pay more than 20€ for TV, maybe 30€ if I was living in some secluded village and there would be no other option. TV channels are the most useless thing people throw money at IMO. Like spending time in front of TV is the coolest thing to do ever.. as if sitting in front of PC all day would not be enough.. lol.

I could get like 4 great dinners for $200 in a high end restaurant, paying that for something that should be free (just because of those annoying commercials) is ridiculous. No way.

I'm glad you can't afford it in your studio apartment you made the thread xbouy.

$200 is for internet only where I live, not for cable channels. Again we see why you're a fake nic failure on GFY living in a studio apartment with no bedroom speaking a foreign language with no life of your own but lonelines & bitter regret.

I could get like 4 great dinners for $200 in a high end restaurant, paying that for something that should be free (just because of those annoying commercials) is ridiculous. No way.
What's the cost of living in your country?

You do not buy 4 great dinners at a high-end restaurant in the United States for $200. I can spend that easily on one night of sushi, just me. $100 for a good steak, a side and a drink.

Using that as a benchmark, I'm wondering what comparable cable service in your country would be priced at.

$200 is for internet only where I live, not for cable channels.
I'm around the corner from you and I pay much less for Att internet and directv, with no signal issues. I agree Cox sucks, but why on earth would you pay $200 for just internet, unless that's all your apt is set up for.

Just checked one of the local companies offering these services..

500 mb/s internet (fiber) + 98 TV channels .. 30€ per month, 20€ setup

But that doesn't change the fact that I would not pay that as I consider 99% of the stuff in TV stupid crap spiced up with annoying commercials and lame TV shows. I get the important local channels for free with my digital antenna - I bought the antenna for 20€. Around 18 channels total, incuding 5 great channels from the neigbouring country. Lol..

If there is a good movie (not many are really that good) , I prefer the cinema or even good old DVD. I am very picky when it comes to movies.

Fantastic Internet price. Will not find that anywhere around here.

I think the TV would be comparable based on what you were saying, but yours includes Internet as well so it's irrelevant.

I do agree though, I haven't had cable for 2 years. I have an antenna that I bought for $50 flat fee, don't watch that either.

I'd rather read.

I'm not suggesting sitting in front of the TV all the time is good. I am just saying if someone is paying a lot for cable it may be to just get certain channels so they can watch what they want to watch when they want to watch it. My brother would be an example of this. He has a full cable package with a few different movie channels like HBO. He works 50 hours a week and has two kids that he spends a ton of time with as well as a girlfriend he recently started dating. He only watches a few hours of TV per week, but he is willing to pay for everything so when he wants to watch it, he has a lot of choices.

I pay 16€ per month for internet (fiber) and it is more than enough for me, never found it slow. Absolutely stable. Uploading shit to TUBES all the time.

That's what happened in Canada. Data Caps, higher prices, and then offers for "unlimited" internet packages at higher rates. I know Cox Cable had caps, but never enforced them before. Not sure if that is or has changed? Just a matter of time as more and more cord cutting takes place. They will get their revenue somehow.

I doubt even Mark Prince and who ever, like you for instance could fix health care. I don't see a fix coming anytime soon. the NK issue is good enough this week for me

and your statement: Trump promised affordable healthcare but just passed a budget giving multinational corporations billions in tax breaks.

BTW your logic chain isn't long enough with facts to support this as any positive statement with actual meaning, okay?

you can write well thought out dissertations to complete your thoughts in a logical correlated trail to your conclusions but to be honest about it I have no intention of ever reading one. cool?

and pretty sure I could find this in any political rhetoric from any elected official. seriously you might consider getting a life. just sayin, you know... bitterness taints your life essences, the very essence you share with those you love. I'm sure you understand 10% or 20% or dirty water poured in to a glass with the corresponding percentage to complete 100 percent of clear water does not produce clear water. when you share of your 'self' you are sharing everything. is this something you wish to share? glee at the misfortunes of others? really? you sure got an interesting path to trot and teach....

I've considered cutting off my cable, but for all the services we get, it's not that bad price-wise.

The one service I'd like to eliminate are the M-channels (TMN, the movie network), but it's the only way I can get HBO where I live, so I pay the $15.98 per month. It also let's me use their streaming on-demand portion. For now it's fine.
