You shouldn't either.

My friend brings his laptop down here to play networked Warcraft III all the time. </B>Every single time</B> we network the computers and get on the net, his Windows Update starts downloading shit. I told him, there is no way I would let Captain Bill just add things to my computer.

Call it what ya will.

It sounds like you're paranoid, and you're still doing things the hard way.

Strange...

But you want your customers to allow your programs to automatically update and add things to Their computer?

You are working on/planning an automatic updater for AVS Weasel are you not?

Humm....

Ok.. I call it this...

YOU:

ME:

Me being paranoid isn't the issue.

The issue is that Microsoft "phones home" for just about anything and everything you do these days. For example -- when I want to search for a file on my local hard drives, wtf would microsoft need to phone home? (Because it does... to sa.microsoft.com)

I paid for the OS and I don't want the OS making ANY uneeded or unwanted communication with Microsoft. Microsoft has a bit of a shady past with dealing with other businesses if you know what I mean.

I would be 100% on a Linux or FreeBSD if they released photoshop and dreamweaver for it.

Enter OSX....

To answer your comment, OSX can be locked down and audited a lot better & easier than windows can - since most of it is built on BSD.

Sure they still have bugs, every OS does. But there isn't a conspiracy around the whole bug reporting process. Most of the bugs found are found and reported (to places like bugtraq) by the open source community with fixes available within hours.

Microsoft is at it again, I downloaded the IE6 patch for WinXP, and when I tried installing, it stated:

You must have Internet Explorer 6

... Which I do have.

sa usually stands for 'Software Assurance' when dealing with MS.

Maybe it's just checking if you have a valid license?

Actually I think it has something to do with the Help and Support Center in XP conntecting for better search results.

Not sure....I don't use XP.

It's Microsoft's strategy that brought them to this financial success. This is how they can have complete products in such short periods and are always ahead of the game. I was assigned to read articles that talk about their software engineering process, in the Software Engineering class i was taking. They may not have got-nothing-better-to-do opensource supporting code hacker nerds all over the 3rd wold countries, but they do have very systematic daily builds on their projects where they code and fix at the same time, which involves a lot of user interaction as well. They release alpha's to selected people and keep updating the system daily according to the user responses. When they reach a treshold of stability, they release the final product.. They could have waited a lot longer and fix more bugs before the release but that wouldnt let them eliminate their competitors like this maybe. They have improved their standards after they were able to capture almost the whole market. Since Win95, on every single product they made, they have raised their quality thresholds before the release of the final product. Win XP is one quality piece of OS in my opinion and their next one will be even better. They may have questionable strategies on how they try to keep the whole market to themselves, but they'll need the strength to keep increasing the quality of the products.

having said all that.. i still would prefer *nix OS for my webserver, since it suits better for that purpose. MS's primary target was home PC's, and thats exactly where I use WinXP. One OS cannot be the best for all purposes. Microsoft will need to grow even more to be able to capture most of the market in other areas such as webservers, database systems, distributed computing etc... Companies like IBM have attempted to do all that, but now they keep falling behind more and more everyday. Now they are just trying to do some move in the areas which Microsoft has not targeted yet.

this shit is all political.. but i find big companies very inspiring.. i rather discuss about this subject than the bullshit going on with the world politics.

I love bashing Bill. I had the opportunity to meet with him in 1987. My client and I were flown to an IBM conference and given a private audience. We had several million to spend on technology, IBM wanted the money; Bill wanted his piece too.

Bill was to convince us to buy IBM hardware and OS/2 (remember that). After the IBM people left he told us buy any hardware but avoid OS/2, Windows 3.1 was coming.

Later that day we went to an IBM hosted presentation where Bill told the assembled minions to back OS/2 and IBM technology.

I trust nothing Microsoft says but I did very well buying their stock. The lesson well, you figure it out. It is the American way.

I own a Macintosh now and have no complaints.
